The following remarks apply to the four principal boroughs only: The births in December were 195, against 205 in November—a decrease of 10. The deaths amounted to 103, against 104 in November. There were twenty deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: five men aged 84, 82, 80, 77, and 68, and two women aged 84 and 69, died at Auckland; six men aged 83, 81, 76, 74, 67, and 65, and three women aged 93, 84, and 73, at Wellington; a man of 69, at Christchurch; a man of 65, and two women of 77 and 68, at Dunedin.
Of the four chief towns Wellington had the highest death-rate for December, being 1·24 per 1,000 persons living. At Auckland and Dunedin the rate was 0·86, and at Christchurch 0·84, per 1,000. The comparison with December, 1892, shows a higher rate last month at Wellington and Christchurch, and lower at Auckland and Dunedin.
