Notice of Request to amend Specification.
Patent Office,
Wellington, 28th September, 1893.
A REQUEST to be allowed to amend the under-
mentioned specification for Letters Patent has been
received, and is open to public inspection at this office.
Any person may, at any time within one month from the
date of this Gazette, give me notice in writing, in dupli-
cate, of opposition to the amendment, stating in such
notice the particular grounds of objection. A fee of 10s. is
payable with such notice:—
No. 1393.—WILLIAM ANDREWS and ARTHUR WARD BEAVEN,
carrying on business as co-partners as Engineers, of Christ-
church, New Zealand. An invention for improvements in
chaff-cutters.
The nature of the proposed amendments is as follows,
viz.:—
-
By inserting the words "bagging apparatus for" be-
tween the words "improvements in" and "chaff-cutters,"
forming the title. -
By inserting the words "turnover or" immediately
before the words "slide is therefore automatic," in line 23
of the Schedule. -
By inserting the following words, figures, &c., between
the descriptive portion of the specification and the claim,
viz.:—
"The ordinary method of bagging chaff by machinery is
well known, and therefore needs no explanation, but in order
that our invention may be more easily understood we will
refer to the accompanying sheet of drawings, on which—
"Figure 1 is a front elevation of our apparatus;
"Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same; and
"Figure 3 is a view showing the clutch-gearing.
"Similar letters refer to similar parts in all the figures: a¹
and a² are the cylinders; b¹ and b² are the screws, which are
driven in any suitable manner; c¹ and c² are the bags to
receive the chaff; e is the elevator to conduct the chaff from
the cutter or bin to the feeding-hopper e¹; f is the turnover
plate oscillating on a spindle f¹, and actuated (by preference)
by a lever f² and chains or cords g¹ and g², which chains are
themselves actuated by the descent of the bags c¹ and c²
alternately; h are bevel wheels fixed to the spindles of the
screws b¹ and b² to drive the same; h¹ are bevel wheels
working loosely on the shaft h²; h³ is a clutch working on a
feather formed on the shaft h²; l is a disengaging-lever.
"It will be evident from this description of the several parts
that our invention consists in providing an apparatus whereby
one sack can be filled whilst the other is at rest, and that this
operation can be performed either by hand or automatically;
and the principle can be extended to more than two sacks if
desired."
-
By striking out the present claims, and inserting instead,
after the words "What we claim as new and novel is," the
following, viz.:—
"1st. In bagging apparatus for chaff-cutters, the combina-
tion of two presses, such as a¹ and a², with turnover plate f,
and rocking lever f², as and for the purpose substantially as
described herein and illustrated on the accompanying draw-
ings.
"2nd. In bagging apparatus for chaff-cutters, the combina-
tion of two presses, such as a¹ and a², with turnover plate f,
rocking lever f², and chains g¹ and g², or mechanical equiva-
lents of the same, as and for the purposes substantially as
described herein and illustrated on accompanying drawings.
"3rd. In bagging apparatus for chaff-cutters, the combi-
ation of the clutch h with bevel-wheels h¹ and h² and
disengaging-lever l, or mechanical equivalents of the same,
substantially as described herein, and illustrated on the
accompanying drawings." -
By lodging one sheet of drawings, containing three
figures, numbered and lettered in usual manner.
The applicants state as their reason for the request,
"We are advised to more fully describe and ascertain the
