The following remarks apply to the four principal boroughs only: The births in September were 232, against 242 in August, a decrease of 10. The deaths amounted to 94, against 100 in August, a decrease of 6. There were 15 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: 2 males of 70 and 65, and 2 females of 76 and 65, died at Auckland; 3 males of 72, 70, and 69, and 2 females of 76 and 71, at Wellington; 1 female of 70 at Christchurch; 1 male of 66, and 4 females of 83, 75, 71, and 67, at Dunedin.
Specific Febrile or Zymotic Diseases.—The mortality from this class of disease was low in September, as in August; the total number of deaths in the four chief towns being only 9, or 9·57 per cent of the deaths from all causes. At Auckland there were 4 deaths from influenza, diphtheria, typhoid fever, and diarrhoea. At Wellington typhoid caused 2 deaths, and there were also 2 from diarrhoea. The total for Christchurch was 1 death from diphtheria. At Dunedin there were no deaths from zymotic diseases. Of the deaths from typhoid fever at the four principal centres since the beginning of the year, the greatest number (22) have taken place at Wellington, Auckland has had 8, Christchurch 2, and Dunedin 1.
Constitutional Diseases.—The number of deaths in September was 21. Phthisis caused 9 of these, against 11 in August and 18 in July. From cancer there were 3 deaths, against 4 in August.
Local Diseases.—Of 55 deaths from local diseases, 21 were from diseases of the respiratory organs. This is a higher mortality than prevailed in August, when the number was 18 deaths; or for July, when there were only 14. Of the above-mentioned 21 deaths in September from croup, bronchitis, pneumonia, and other diseases of the respiratory organs, 7 were at Auckland, 5 at Wellington, 2 at Christchurch, and 7 at Dunedin.
Violent Deaths.—These numbered 5. Three were accidental, one a case of manslaughter by shooting, and one a suicide by hanging.
The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal specific febrile or zymotic diseases, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong as being the most important special diseases which give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
