The following remarks apply only to the four principal boroughs: The births in April were 232, being the same in number as in March. The deaths amounted to 99, against 107 in March, a decrease of 8. There were 14 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: 1 male of 66, and 5 females of 77, 74, 73, 72, and 70 respectively, died at Auckland; 5 females of 82, 75 (2), 74, and 68 at Wellington; 1 female of 70 at Christchurch; and 1 male of 69, and 1 female of 79, at Dunedin.
Specific Febrile or Zymotic Diseases.—The deaths from these diseases fell from 46 in February to 27 in March, and 21 in April, the mortality diminishing as the weather advanced. From influenza there was only 1 death in April, at Auckland. Diphtheria again caused 1 death during the month at Wellington. Typhoid fever, which was fatal in 10 cases during March, caused 5 deaths in the latter month; of these, the deaths at Wellington for the two months were the most numerous, the numbers being 7 and 5 respectively. The great prevalence of diarrhœal diseases observed in February (38 deaths) has subsided, the number having fallen to 12 in March, and again to 10 in April.
Constitutional Diseases.—The same number of deaths occurred in March as in April, namely, 22. Cancer claimed 7 victims last month, 4 of them being in Wellington. There were 8 deaths from phthisis.
Local Diseases.—The total number for March was 36, and for April 40. Diseases of the respiratory organs were more prevalent in April, resulting in 11 deaths, 7 of which took place at Auckland. With the approach of winter the deaths in this order almost invariably increase, whilst those from zymotic disease decrease.
