Account of Land in Cultivation and Agricultural Produce, February, 1892.

THE results of the collection made in February last, arranged according to provincial districts and counties, are published for general information.

† Including—5,447 acres in maize, produce 238,746 bushels; 4,730 acres in rye and here, produce 91,271 bushels; 6,254 acres in peas, produce 147,881 bushels; 3,298 acres in beans, produce 98,529 bushels; 639 acres in hops, produce 6,810cwt.; 6 acres in tobacco, produce 1,482lb. dried leaf; 5,377 acres in mangold, beet, carrots, parsnips, and onions; 1,679 acres in maize, cut for green food; and 3,307 acres in other crops.

Note.—In the returns of agricultural statistics as above summarised, gardens, orchards, plantations of forest-trees, holdings of one acre or less in extent, and holdings occupied by aboriginal natives, are not included, but the returns for 1892 show a total extent of land in garden of 9,608 acres, in orchard of 19,627 acres, and in plantations of forest-trees of 38,723 acres.

In addition to the agricultural statistics, the following information as to the number of cattle and breeding cows was also obtained: Provincial Districts—Auckland, 196,445 head of cattle (of which 70,060 were breeding cows); Taranaki, 109,966 head of cattle (44,201 breeding cows); Hawke's Bay, 50,318 head of cattle (18,437 breeding cows); Wellington, 151,131 head of cattle (54,658 breeding cows); Marlborough, 7,800 head of cattle (2,859 breeding cows); Nelson, 30,890 head of cattle (10,639 breeding cows); Westland, 6,899 head of cattle (2,251 breeding cows); Canterbury, 64,924 head of cattle (29,970 breeding cows); Otago, 128,160 head of cattle (54,628 breeding cows). Total, 746,533 head of cattle (of which 287,703 were breeding cows).

The returns also show that, at the time of the collection, there were 218 silos or ensilage stacks in the colony.
