(1) One in connection with saw-mill. Value of materials used not stated in two cases, of land in four cases, and of buildings in three cases. (2) One in connection with grain mill, one not in operation in 1890, and two for part of year only. Value of materials used not stated in four cases. (3) These totals represent the full amounts for all the above specified industries, excepting that the value of lands used for mining is not included, and that the values of Crown lands have been omitted throughout. The values are not separately given when the number of any particular industry is so small that the particulars might be identified, but stated collectively at the end of Class IV. (4) The value of buildings, machinery, and plant connected with flax-mills and quartz-crushing works was not returned in 1881 or 1878.
NOTE.—Two or more distinct industries were carried on at some establishments. In such cases each industry has been counted for the purposes of the above table, but the particulars of power, hands, and plant employed, and wages paid, unless stated separately for each branch of industry, have been treated as belonging to the most important work.
