Health and Meteorology Statistics

Oct. 22.] THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE. 1203

The following remarks apply only to the four principal boroughs: The births in September were 253, against 265 in August, a decrease of 12. The deaths amounted to 115, against 105 in August. There were 18 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: a male of 69, and 4 females of 76, 75, 74, and 71, died at Auckland; 5 males of 83, 77, 76, 70, and 66, and 4 females of 80, 75, 73 (2), at Wellington; a male of 69, and 3 females of 74, 73, and 71, at Dunedin.

Specific Febrile or Zymotic Diseases.—There was the exceptional feature about the mortality from these diseases in September, that nearly three-fourths thereof were caused by whooping-cough, which was more fatal in September than during any previous month on record. The mortality from this disease increased from 1 in March to 3 in April, 5 in May, 8 in June, 5 in July, 11 in August, and 17 in September, of which 14 occurred in Wellington, and 3 in Auckland.

Constitutional Diseases.—These diseases caused 26 deaths in September, against 23 in August; the increase being due to the greater mortality from phthisis, from 10 to 16 deaths. Cancer caused 3 deaths last month, against 5 in August, and 9 in July.

Local Diseases.—The mortality from diseases in this class was, on the whole, 3 less in September than in August. The diseases of the nervous system caused only 7 deaths, against 14 in the preceding month; diseases of the circulatory system (heart disease, &c.) caused also fewer deaths, 9 last month, against 13 in August; but the mortality from diseases of the respiratory system was greater in September, viz., 24 deaths, against 21 in August. 3 deaths occurred in the last month from childbirth.

Violent Deaths.—4 deaths occurred from accident, including one from drowning, and 2 persons committed suicide.

The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal specific febrile or zymotic diseases, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong as being the most important special diseases which give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
