Notice of Application to amend Specification.
Patent Office,
Wellington, 9th July, 1891.
A REQUEST to be allowed to amend the specification relating to the under-mentioned application has been received, and is open to public inspection. Any person may, at any time within one month from the date of this Gazette, give me notice in writing, in duplicate, of opposition to the amendment, stating in such notice the particular grounds of his objection. A fee of 10s. is payable with such notice:—
No. 3796.—DAVID RANKEN SHIRREFF GALBRAITH, of Auckland, New Zealand, Fellow of the Institute of Chemistry of Great Britain and Ireland. An invention entitled “The Bessemer Converse Treatment of Magnetic Oxide of Iron-sand.”
The applicant states his reasons for desiring to amend his specification to be as follows, viz.:—
-
To show that it is the general principle of the Bessemer process by a converse method or action which is claimed; and
-
To show how the blast is obtained and applied.
The following are the particulars of the proposed amendment, viz.:—
-
By inserting between the word “gases” and the word “Should,” in line 14 of the schedule, the following words, viz.: “The blast of deoxidizing-gas or gases is obtained either by delivery of the gas or gases under the required pressure from a gasometer, or directly from the tubes of a ‘Galbraith-Bessemer Non-intermittent Water-gas Producer,’ for which provisional protection was obtained in the Colony of New Zealand on the 10th June current. The method to be followed out in this process of treating the magnetic oxide of ironsand will be that adopted by the Bessemer, as indicated in the records of his experiments and working successes in regard to the production of steel, and known as the ‘Bessemer Process.’ In the case of the present invention, however, water-gas or other suitable reducing-gas or gases are used instead of the blast of air as used by Bessemer in his process for the manufacture of steel. The ironsand to be operated on, having been freed from sand or other matters it may be deemed advisable to remove, is discharged in a fine stream into a crucible or other suitable receptacle, and which is kept at the required temperature within a suitable furnace; and into the bottom of which crucible or other suitable receptacle is meanwhile playing the reducing-gas or gases, such gas or gases being admitted by suitable perforations through or in the wall of such crucible or other containing receptacle. Under the action of the water-gas or other suitable reducing-gas the ironsand becomes reduced to the metallic condition; and this may be hastened by adding any suitable form of carbon to the ironsand before it is fed into the crucible. When it is deemed that a sufficient quantity of iron or steel has accumulated in the crucible the feed of sand is stopped, and the gas allowed to play through the molten metal for the desired period of time, the charge is then tapped off and received in ingot-mould or other suitable receiver. The taphole is then re-plugged, and the operation repeated with a fresh quantity of ironsand. The reducing-gas or gases are thus forced through the molten metal as in the case of the molten pig-iron in the Bessemer process. The Bessemer blast is an oxidizing one; the present, being a reducing blast, is termed the ‘converse’ of the Bessemer.”
-
By inserting immediately after the word “manner,” in line 17 of the schedule, the following words, viz.: “say by adding powdered charcoal to the ironsand before it is fed into the crucible as before referred to herein.”
-
By inserting after the last line the following words, viz.: “Second: The delivery of the reducing-gas or gases under pressure for the reduction of magnetic or black ironsand substantially as described.”
