WELLINGTON, TUESDAY, JUNE 30, 1891.

Teachers holding Certificates or Licenses under “The Education Act, 1877.”

Education Department,
Wellington, 23rd June, 1891.

THE following list of teachers is issued in accordance with the twenty-seventh section of the regulations respecting teachers’ certificates made by an Order in Council on the 5th July, 1887.

Reasons for promotion are indicated by the letters E, M, S, F, which stand respectively for examination, marks awarded by an Inspector, length of service, and consideration of fresh evidence of attainments or further consideration of evidence already submitted. Any teacher who has been promoted can have a record of promotion indorsed upon his certificate, on making application to the Department; and any teacher whose status has ceased to be provisional can obtain a full certificate on returning his provisional certificate.

An asterisk denotes that the certificate is provisional, or that the issue of the certificate is deferred.

In the column headed “Engagement” is inserted the name of the Education Board under which a teacher in a public school is acting, or an indication of other employment in connection with public instruction. A blank in this column signifies that a teacher was not engaged in the work of public instruction at the end of 1890, or at the date of information received during the current year.

The word “Miss” is enclosed in square brackets in the case of married ladies whose maiden name alone is known to the Department.

In the summary at the end of the list certificated and licensed teachers are classified as employed or unemployed according as the column headed “Engagement” shows or does not show engagement in public instruction. In this sense there are 1,027 certificated teachers unemployed. Among them are 305 married women, and a large number of teachers who have gone into business, or retired from active service, or left the colony.
