REMARKS.

November.—Rainfall on the whole below the average; showery in early part of the month, and fine during latter part, except very heavy rain with N.W. gale on 26th, 1·57in. Prevailing N.W. wind and frequently strong, especially on 11th and 26th. On the whole tolerably fine weather; lightning on night of 2nd. Maximum temperature in shade, 74; minimum, 39. Mean temperature of dewpoint, 46·3; mean humidity, 70.

December.—Heavy rain early part of month, and strong N.W. wind; on 1st, in two hours, 2in. of rain fell, causing floods, and on the 2nd the record was 2·40in. for previous twenty-four hours. Fine from 6th to 17th, when heavy showers fell, also on 18th; strong N.W. wind on 13th and 14th, though fine; very strong N.W. wind from 23rd to 27th, and showery during latter part of month; slight hail on 2nd; prevailing N.W. wind. Maximum temperature in shade, 73·3; minimum, 44. Mean temperature of dewpoint, 51·7; mean humidity, 72. Earthquake on 23rd, at 12.45 a.m., slight, W. to E. Partial eclipse of sun on 12th, 2.41 p.m. to 5 p.m.

January.—On the whole a showery month, especially towards the end, when heavy rain fell on 25th and 26th (1·30in. and 1·25in.); prevailing N.W. wind, and frequently strong; thunder on 3rd. Maximum temperature in shade, 71; minimum, 44. Mean temperature of dewpoint, 54·4; mean humidity, 82. Earthquake on 13th, at 11.38 p.m., short and sharp; brilliant meteor after midnight.

Tin-mining Leases cancelled.

NOTICE is hereby given that the following tin-mining lease applications at Pegasus, Stewart Island, have been declared cancelled for non-payment of rents—namely: Nos. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 19, 44, 61, 65, 84, 96, 131, and 144. Notice is further given that the above-mentioned areas will be open for application at this office, in accordance with the regulations, on Wednesday, the 1st April, 1891.
