The following remarks apply only to the four principal boroughs:—
The births in July were 238, the same number as in June.
The deaths amounted to 95, against 112 in June.
There were 24 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: 3 males of 76, 69, and 66, and 5 females of 85, 79, 77, 66, and 65, died at Auckland; 4 males of 83, 74, 70, and 68, and 1 female of 80, at Wellington; 1 male of 83, and 1 female of 79, at Christchurch; and 5 males of 79, 72, 68, and 66 (2), and 4 females of 80, 79, 78, and 77, at Dunedin.

Specific Febrile or Zymotic Diseases.—The deaths in this class fell in number from 20 in June to 9 in July. The decrease is owing to the greatly-reduced mortality from typhoid fever (11 deaths in June and 1 in July), and to the absence of deaths from scarlet fever, which caused 3 deaths in June. Only 3 diarrhœal deaths occurred in July, 2 in Wellington and 1 in Dunedin, all of children. In the winter-months the deaths from diarrhœa are always very few in number.

Constitutional Diseases.—There were 24 deaths from these diseases in July, against 25 in June. Rheumatism, resulting in heart disease, caused 2 deaths in July; but cancer caused only 6 deaths, against 8 in June, and phthisis caused only 9 deaths, against 14 in the previous month.

Local Diseases.—There was a considerable decrease in the mortality from these causes, the deaths having been 53 in June and 44 in July. Diseases of the nervous system caused 10 deaths in July, against 7 in June; but there was a decrease in the mortality from diseases of the circulatory system from 13 to 9 deaths. Diseases of the respiratory system were also less fatal than in June, having caused 15 deaths in July, against 18 in the former month. There was also a very considerable decrease in the number of deaths from diseases of the digestive system—4 in July, 11 in June.

Violent Deaths.—Of the 6 deaths thus classified, one was a case of accidental poisoning, and one of a person who committed suicide by poison. The death of a youth of fifteen occurred as a result of over-exertion in running.

The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal specific febrile or zymotic diseases, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong as being the most important special diseases which give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
