of opposition to the grant of the amendments, stating in
such notice the particular grounds of his objection.
No. 1152.—ALFRED ROBB and WILLIAM STOKES, of Syden-
ham, in the Colony of New Zealand, Carpenters. An inven-
tion for a cup-headed self-adjusting tinned wire roofing-nail,
requiring no washer.
The said William Stokes desires to amend the specification
in the following particulars, viz.:—

  1. By striking out the words “tinned wire” in the title.
  2. By inserting between the words “cupping of the head”
    and the word “which” the words “with a cup-shaped
    flange,” and between the word “which” and the word
    “causes” the words “being of soft metal, such as lead.”
  3. By striking out the words “The further novelty is that
    it also saves,” and substituting therefor the words “The
    invention is useful by reason of its saving.”
  4. By striking out the word “all,” and inserting in its
    place the word “most.”
  5. By striking out the words “The special novelty in,”
    and substituting therefor the words “An advantage with
    regard to.”
  6. By striking out the words between “Fig. 1” and “Fig. 2,”
    viz.: “The tinned-wire nail now in use,” and inserting
    instead the following words, &c., viz.: “A wire nail now in
    use known as Venable’s, which requires dressing down.
    Fig. 1A. A lead-headed nail, slightly cupped, now in use,
    known as Parker’s, which by reason of the solidity of the
    head does not adjust itself. Fig. 1B. A section of same.”
  7. By inserting after the words, &c. “Fig. 2. The cup-
    headed self-adjusting roofing nail,” the words, &c., as
    follows, viz.: “our invention. Fig. 2A. A section thereof
    showing the flange or cup, and in what manner it differs
    from Parker’s nail.”
  8. By striking out the word “same,” in the words, &c.
    “Fig. 3. Half section of same,” and substituting therefor
    the words, &c. “Fig. 2.”
  9. By striking out the words “The tinned-wire nail now
    in use,” after the word, &c. “Fig. 4,” and substituting
    therefor the words “The nail known as Venable’s.”
  10. By inserting after the words, &c. “Fig. 5. The cup-
    headed nail,” the words “Our invention.”
  11. By adding the following words to the specification,
    viz.: “Having now particularly described and ascertained
    the nature of our said invention, and in what manner the
    same is to be performed, we declare that what we claim is:
    A nail with a self-adjusting head made of soft metal, with a
    cup-shaped flange, so as to adjust itself to corrugated iron
    or other uneven material, substantially as above described,
    and as delineated in the plan annexed hereto.”
  12. By the addition to the plans of three drawings of nails
    marked “Fig. 1A,” “Fig. 1B,” and “Fig. 2A,” respectively.

Tenders for Telegraph-poles.

TENDERS are invited for the supply and delivery, at the
Telegraph Stores, Wellington, of 1,000 25ft. telegraph-
poles, 1,000 20ft. telegraph-poles, and 1,000 pole-butts; all
of heart of totara.
The specifications of the above can be seen at the Tele-
graph Offices, Wellington, Masterton, Eketahuna, Carterton,
Palmerston North, Halcombe, and the Post Office, Hunter-
ville.
Tenders will be received for each kind, or the lot, or in
quantities of not less than 300 of each, not later than the 8th
September; but in any case each kind must be tendered for
separately.

Te Makarini Scholarships, held at Te Aute College, Hawke’s
Bay.

THREE scholarships of the yearly value of £35, tenable
for two years, are offered for competition. One of

these scholarships is open to all Maoris that have regularly
and continuously attended a Native school during the pre-
vious year, and are under sixteen years of age at the end of
the month preceding the date of the examination; the
other two scholarships are open to all Maoris that are under
fifteen years of age at the end of the month preceding the
date of the examination, and that have attended a Native
village school regularly and continuously during the previous
twelve months. These scholarships are offered for competi-
tion among Maori boys, on the conditions laid down in the
regulations of the Trustees of the Te Makarini Scholarships
Fund, as printed in the Native Schools Code, 1886, and in
the supplementary regulations that have been sent out to all
teachers. The examination will be held at convenient
centres on the 15th and 16th December, 1890.
Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers,
send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education
Department, Wellington, of their intention to present them-
selves for examination. Such notice must be posted not
later than the 31st October next.
Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be
obtained from teachers of Native schools and boarding insti-
tutions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the Secre-
tary for Education.
