Sale of Totara Timber on Crown Lands, Wellington District.

Wellington, 4th August, 1890.

NOTICE is hereby given, in terms of “The Land Act, 1885,” and the regulations issued thereunder, that the trees on the under-mentioned sections will be put up for sale by public auction, at the upset price of 10s. per tree, at the Land Office, Wellington, on Tuesday, the 16th September, 1890, at noon. The purchaser shall pay 50 per centum of the purchase-money on the fall of the hammer, and the balance within thirty days from the date of the sale. He shall have the sole use of the land and the right to cut and remove all timber thereon during a period of five years from the same date:—

  • On Section 129 there are, in addition, 66 kahikatea trees, estimated to contain 206,000 superficial feet, besides about 900 totara trees more or less unsound.

† On Section 133 there are, in addition, about 1,500 totara trees more or less unsound.

All the additional trees will be available to the purchaser, without extra payment, for the term of five years.

Tin-mining Leases cancelled.

NOTICE is hereby given that the following tin-mining lease applications at Pegasus and Kopaka, Stewart Island, have been declared cancelled partly for non-execution of leases by applicants and partly for non-payment of rents, viz:—

Nos. 15 to 18, 21 to 23, 29, 53, 62, 63, 68, 74 to 81, 85, 87, 90, 92, 97, 107 to 117, 122, 124, 126 to 130, 136, 138 to 140, 142, 143.

Notice is further given that the above-mentioned areas will be open for application at this office, in accordance with the regulations, on Monday, the 1st September, 1890.

Civil Service Senior Examination.

IN pursuance of regulations under “The Civil Service Reform Act, 1886,” notice is hereby given that for the Senior Examination of January, 1891, the period of literature will be the period from 1800 to 1850, and the special books will be Milton’s Samson Agonistes, and Shelley’s Prometheus Unbound.

The total loss of population by excess of emigration over immigration, for the six months ended the 30th June, was 3,041 persons.

  • The departures for Australia are given subject to revision, as the Customs emigration returns do not include all passengers who go on board without booking. The numbers may eventually be increased somewhat after receipt of returns from the shipping companies.

† It is important to mention that, in the returns from which this table is made up, immigrants to the colony are all counted at the first port of arrival, and emigrants at the final port of departure.
