Rocky Patch off Cape Direction. - On the edge of the shoal
water to the north-eastward of the cape, and at a distance
from it of 1.6 miles, is a sandy patch with only 1 fathom at
low-water, with deep water close to, outside. It lies in the
following direction: Beacon on y Reef, N. 60Β° E.; highest
tree on No. X. Island, S. 36Β° E.

Reef S.E. of Young Islet. - Careful search was made for
the coral patch awash at low-water shown on the Admiralty
chart as lying about one mile S.E. of Young Islet, but no
indication of shoal-water could be found.

m Reef, Cape Grenville. - A close examination of the north-
west and western edges of m Reef failed to discover the out-
lying patches shown upon the Admiralty chart.

Notice of Intention to take Land for a Road or Public
Highway in the Borough of Woodville, Provincial Dis-
trict of Hawke's Bay.

NOTICE is hereby given, under the provisions of "The
Public Works Act, 1882," that the land mentioned in
the Schedule hereto is required to be taken for a certain
public work, to wit, a road or public highway in the
Borough of Woodville, Provincial District of Hawke's Bay;
and notice is further given that the plan of the said
road and of the land so required to be taken is deposited in
the Public Works Office, Woodville, and is there open for
inspection: And notice is hereby given that all persons
affected by the said public work or by the taking of the
said land shall, if they have any well-grounded objections to
the said public work or to the taking of such land, set forth
the same in writing, and send such writing, within forty
days from the first publication of this notice, to the Minister
for Public Works, Wellington.

Alterations and Additions to the Scale of Fares, Rates, and
Charges in force upon the New Zealand Railways.

THE New Zealand Railway Commissioners, in exercise
and pursuance of the powers conferred by "The
Government Railways Act, 1887," do hereby make the fol-
lowing alterations in and additions to the scale of fares,
rates, and charges on the New Zealand Railways, to come
into force on and after the 25th day of November, 1889:-

PART IV. - LOCAL RATES.
WELLINGTON SECTION.

Haulage of goods and live-stock between the Wellington-
Manawatu Railway Company's Station at Wellington and
the Government Railway-station or sidings at Wellington, or
the Railway Wharf or private sheds or sidings at that
station, will be charged as follows, viz.:--

Goods:
Wool undumped, per bale .. s. d. 0 2
Other goods, per ton .. .. 1 0

Live Stock:
In double-bogie trucks (single or double floor), per
truck .. .. 10 0
In four-wheel trucks (single or double floor), per truck 5 0

PART V.-CLASSIFICATION OF GOODS.

Empties: Casks, cases, kegs, jars, tins, and
tubs for butter, cement, cheese, fish,
fruit, honey, preserved meat, tallow, not
"returned empties," half-rate Class A.
Empties, not otherwise specified, not "re-
turned empties," rate and a half Class A.
Empties, returned See Part III.
Butter- and soap-boxes in pieces, packed in
crates, not "returned empties," half-rate Class B.
Soap, packed, locally manufactured, con-
signed to ship for export Class D.

Notice of Hearing of Application for Patent.

Patent Office,
Wellington, 15th November, 1889.

N O. 4070.-AARON TURNER DANKS, of No. 403, Bourke
Street, Melbourne, Victoria, Brassfounder, has de-
posited at this office a specification of an invention for
improved contrivances for showing in a single line the
register of dials on gas and other meters.

And I have appointed Thursday, the 17th day of July
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear
the said application and all objections thereto; and I re-
quire all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of
such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 2nd day of
July next, at this office, particulars in writing of their
objections to the said application, otherwise they will be
precluded from urging the same.

N O. 4068.-FREDERICK WILLIAM GOUGH, of Christchurch,
New Zealand, Engineer, has deposited at this office
a specification of an invention for an improved spring-frame
for a rear-driving safety bicycle, by means of which the seat
is kept free from vibration and the frame perfectly rigid.

No. 4069. - MILLEN COUGHTREY, M.B., G.M., Surgeon, and
GEORGE SPRINGER, Builder, both of Dunedin, New Zealand,
have deposited at this office a specification of an invention
for the preservation of substances liable to decay, and entitled
"The Food-preservative and Anti-decay Compound."

No. 4071.-JAMES MACARTNEY ROOKE, of Newcastle, New
South Wales, Gentleman, has deposited at this office a speci-
fication of an invention for an improved process for burning
nightsoil, garbage, and other refuse and noxious matters, and
improved machinery therefor.

No. 4072. - HENRI GALOPIN, of Temple Court Place, off
Chancery Lane, Melbourne, Victoria, Scientific Engineer,
and JOHN THOMSON, of Melbourne, as aforesaid, Merchant,
have deposited at this office a specification of an invention
for an automatic-pressure and supply-regulator for gas.

No. 4073. - JOSEPH ARTHUR JAGGER, of Upper Union
Street, Auckland, New Zealand, Commercial Traveller, has
deposited at this office a specification of an invention for im-
provements in the means employed for purifying sewage and
other waters, and for deodorising and utilising the solids and
excreta.

No. 4074. - ELIZABETH LYNHAM MABEE, of Sydney, New
South Wales, Mantle-maker, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for an improved appliance to be
used in washing clothes.

And I have appointed Tuesday, the 18th day of February
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the
said applications and all objections thereto; and I require all
persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any
such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 3rd day of
February next, at this office, particulars in writing of their
objections to any of the said applications, otherwise they
