The following remarks apply only to the four principal boroughs:—
The births in September were 212, against 224 in August, a decrease of 12.
The deaths amounted to 88, against 77 in August.
There were 11 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: 2 males of 73 and 70 died at Auckland; 2 males of 79 and
70 at Wellington; a male of 75, and 2 females of 77 and 69, at Christchurch; and 3 males of 79, 69, and 65, and a female
of 74, at Dunedin.

Specific Febrile or Zymotic Diseases.—There was only 1 death from this class of disease in September. This occurred
at Christchurch; cause, typhoid fever. In August there were 9 deaths, 4 being at Wellington, of which 3 were from
typhoid.

Constitutional Diseases.—The mortality, 26 deaths, was much greater than in the previous month, when there were
only 12 deaths: 16 of the 26 deaths resulted from phthisis, against 8 in August and 3 in July. Cancer caused 4 deaths.

Local Diseases.—Deaths from local diseases increased from 42 in August to 52 in September; of those for September,
19 were from diseases of the respiratory system, as against 14 in August. Diseases of the circulatory system, heart disease,
&c., caused 11 deaths in September, against 3 in August.

Violent Deaths.—There were 3 violent deaths: an infant died from umbilical hæmorrhage and an adult was drowned;
one case of suicide occurred by shooting.
