Assumption of the Government of New Zealand by Sir James Prendergast, Chief Justice.

A PROCLAMATION.

WHEREAS Her Majesty Queen Victoria was graciously pleased, by Letters
Patent passed under the Great Seal of the United Kingdom, and bearing
date at Westminster, the twenty-first day of February, one thousand eight hundred
and seventy-nine, to constitute the office of Governor and Commander-in-Chief in
and over the Colony of New Zealand and its dependencies: And whereas Her said
Majesty was also pleased, by a Commission under the Royal Sign Manual and Signet,
bearing date at Windsor, the twenty-eighth day of November, one thousand eight
hundred and eighty-two, to appoint Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois,
Lieutenant-General in Her Majesty's Army, Knight Grand Cross of the Most
Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Companion of the Most
Honourable Order of the Bath, to be Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over
the said colony and its dependencies during Her said Majesty's will and pleasure: And
whereas Her Majesty was pleased, by a Commission under the Royal Sign Manual and
Signet, bearing date at Windsor, the twenty-second day of February, one thousand
eight hundred and seventy-nine, amongst other things, to appoint the Chief Justice
of the said colony for the time being to administer the Government thereof in case of
the death, incapacity, or removal, or of the departure from the said colony of the
Governor appointed appointed under the said hereinbefore in part recited Letters Patent, with
all and singular the powers and authorities granted by the said Letters Patent: And
whereas the said Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois departed from the said
colony on the twenty-second day of March instant :

Now, therefore, I, James Prendergast, the Chief Justice of the Colony of New
Zealand for the time being, do hereby proclaim and declare that I have this day
taken the oaths prescribed by the hereinbefore in part recited Letters Patent before
His Honour John Edward Denniston, Esquire, one of the Judges of the Supreme
