NOTES FOR JULY.
Auckland.—Showery weather, and prevailing S.W. wind and strong on 17th and 27th; maximum rain on 16th, 1·06in.; thunder on 24th and 27th.
Rotorua.—Wet weather during the month except few fine days during middle of month; maximum rain on 28th, 2·20in.; moderate winds, and prevailed from S. and S.W.; strong S.E. gale on 29th.
Wellington.—On the whole a showery month, and frequently strong winds from N.W. and S.E.; the maximum rainfall recorded on 29th, ·90in.; intervals of pleasant weather in early part of month; prevailing winds N.W. and S.E.; fog on 21st, and lightning on 2nd.
Lincoln.—Showery, with some fine weather occasionally; maximum rain recorded on 11th, ·63in.; prevailing S.W. wind and moderate; strong N.W. wind on 6th with rain; snow on hills on 4 days; fog on 6 days.
Dunedin.—Very wet weather, especially from 9th to 14th and from 26th to 28th; maximum fall recorded on 11th, 3·840in.; prevailing S.W. and N.E. winds and moderate; on 6th strong N.W. wind, and on 23rd strong from S.W.
General Remarks.—Showery weather with strong N.W. and S.E. winds over centre.
NOTES FOR AUGUST.
Auckland.—A showery month; the maximum rainfall on 18th, ·62in.; prevailing S.W. wind and generally light; strong wind on 17th from N.E., and on 28th from W.; thunder on 10th.
Rotorua.—Very showery weather; the maximum rain recorded on 18th, 1·25in.; winds prevailed from N.E. and S.W., and moderate.
Wellington.—Generally showery weather; the maximum rainfall recorded on 28th, ·80in.; prevailing winds from S. and S.E. (strong on 4th, 5th, and 6th), and from N.W. (strong from 22nd to 28th from that quarter); light variable winds during middle of month; hail on 30th and 31st.
Lincoln.—A very wet month; the greatest rain recorded on 11th, 1·166in.; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds; snow on 10th, 24th, and 30th on ranges; hail on 24th and 30th; fog on 1st, 7th, and 8th.
Dunedin.—Very wet weather, the maximum rainfall recorded on 7th, 2·52in.; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds, and strong from latter on 24th, otherwise moderate; snow on 24th; fog on 7th and 9th.
General Remarks.—A wet month generally. Earthquakes at Wellington on 16th, at 6.10 a.m., very slight, and 17th, at 7.20 a.m., slight; at Lincoln on 30th, at 10.30 p.m.
NOTES FOR SEPTEMBER.
Auckland.—Fine weather with slight rain; the maximum rainfall recorded on 25th, ·22in.; prevailing S. and S.W. winds, and moderate, except strong on 1st and 25th.
Rotorua.—Heavy showers towards end of month, but otherwise very fine weather; the maximum rainfall on 27th, ·75in.; prevailing S. and S.W. winds and moderate.
Wellington.—Fine weather, small rainfall; the maximum recorded on 6th, ·34in. (that on the 11th being for the previous 24 hours); wind prevailed from N.W. and moderate, except fresh on three days; hail-squalls on 11th and 12th.
Lincoln.—Generally fine; the maximum rain on 10th, ·497in.; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds, and strong from N.E. on 17th; snow on 18th; hail on 11th, 12th, and 18th; fog on 22nd and 28th.
Dunedin.—Slight showers during middle of month, but otherwise very fine weather; the greatest rain recorded on 17th, ·14in.; prevailing S.W. wind, and strong on 20th and 21st.
General Remarks.—Very fine weather with moderate winds and small rainfall. Earthquakes reported at Wellington on 1st, at 4.15 a.m., very long double shock, E.-and-W.; on 5th, during night, slight, E. to W.; on 20th, at 10 p.m., slight. At Canterbury on 1st, at 4.14 a.m., very severe, doing considerable damage; also on 4th, 5th, and 9th, all smart. At Dunedin on 1st, at 4.15 a.m.
NOTES FOR OCTOBER.
Auckland.—Fine during middle of month, but otherwise showery; the maximum rain recorded on 22nd, ·81in.; prevailing S.W. wind, and strong on 9th and 20th.
Lincoln.—Middle of month fine, but early and latter part very wet; the maximum rainfall on 7th, 1·81in.; prevailing S.W. wind and moderate.
Wellington.—Showery, with intervals of fine weather; maximum rain recorded on 22nd, ·75in.; prevailing wind from N.W., and strong or stormy from that quarter on 13 days; distant thunder on 24th; hail on night of 21st.
Lincoln.—A fine month, with light showers; the greatest fall recorded on 17th, ·171in.; prevailing wind from N.W., and strong on 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 15th; also strong on 27th from S.E., and again on 29th, 30th, and 31st from N.W.
Dunedin.—Showers at commencement and latter part, but fine during middle of month; maximum rainfall on 22nd, ·524in.; prevailing S.W. wind, and strong on 9th and 31st; hail on 30th.
General Remarks.—Rather wet weather towards end of month, but otherwise fine. Earthquakes at Rotorua on 17th, at 8.15 p.m., smart, S.E. to N.W.; at Wellington on 23rd, at 8.15 p.m., two shocks, moderate, and on 26th after midnight, sharp; at Lincoln on 12th, at 2.25 a.m., and on 23rd, at 8.19 p.m.
NOTES FOR NOVEMBER.
Auckland.—A showery month; the maximum rainfall on 15th, ·72in.; prevailing S.W. wind, strong on 17th from S.; thunder on 15th.
Rotorua.—Records incomplete.
Wellington.—Showery almost throughout month, the maximum rain falling on 11th, 2·65in; strong S.E. wind on 9th, 10th, and 11th, and cold weather; and stormy from 13th to 16th from N.W., from which quarter the wind prevailed; thunder on 20th; hail on 1st and 23rd; an unpleasant month.
Lincoln.—Wet unpleasant weather, with short intervals of fine; maximum rain recorded on 9th, 1·041in.; prevailing winds from N.E. and N.W. and S.W., and strong on 8 days; thunder on 4 days; snow on 1st; hail on 1st, 20th, and 23rd.
Dunedin.—Fine in middle of month, but otherwise showery, cold, and disagreeable; the maximum rain recorded on 23rd, ·44in.; prevailing W. and S.W. winds, and strong on 1st and 27th from that quarter, and on 11th from N.E., and 14th from N.W.; snow on 1st; hail on 15th and 22nd.
General Remarks.—Showery weather prevailed during this period, with strong S. and W. winds. Earthquakes reported at Dunedin on 23rd.
NOTES FOR DECEMBER.
Auckland.—Showery during middle of month, but otherwise very fine weather; the maximum rainfall recorded on 14th, ·38in.; prevailing S.W. wind, and strong on 10th and 13th; hail on 14th.
Rotorua.—Very fine weather; only three days of rain; the maximum fall on 13th, ·67in.; prevailing S.W. wind and moderate.
Wellington.—Fine weather generally, but strong winds from W. and N.W.; showery at commencement, during middle, and at end of month, but small total rainfall, the maximum recorded on 13th, ·67in.; distant thunder, with lightning, on 9th.
Lincoln.—A fine month, with light showers; the maximum rainfall on 26th, ·292in.; strong wind on 13th and 14th from S.W., otherwise moderate and variable; thunder on 31st; hail on 4th and 9th.
Dunedin.—Very showery at intervals, and some fine weather; the maximum rain recorded on 14th, ·996in.; prevailing S.W. winds and moderate, except strong on 14th; thunder on 12th and 22nd.
General Remarks.—Generally fine, pleasant weather and moderate winds, except strong from N.W. over centre. Earthquakes at Wellington on 8th, at 7.10 a.m., slight; at Lincoln, on 27th, at 9.30 p.m., and 31st, at 9 p.m.; at Dunedin, on 27th.
