Commissioner's Decisions under Tariff Acts.

Department of Trade and Customs,
Wellington, 1st December, 1888.

IT is hereby notified, for public information, that the Hon
Commissioner of Trade and Customs has decided to
interpret "The Customs and Excise Duties Act, 1888," in
relation to the under-mentioned articles as follow:—

NOTE.—"Not otherwise enumerated" appears as n.o.e.; "other
kinds" as o.k. Articles marked thus * are corrections of Commis-
sioner's Order No. 305.

Articles and how classed. Rate of Duty.
Articles and materials suited only for, and to

be used solely in, the fabrication of goods
in the colony, to include tires for railway-
engine wheels; *range-knobs; stove-screws
and bolts | Free. |
| Bicycles, tricycles, &c., parts of, to include
plated heads, necks, and handle-bars; ball
and other pedals; bearings; and all finished
portions of a like character; saddles, springs,
saddle-bags or pockets (under section 14 of
"The Customs and Excise Duties Act,

| Bicycles, tricycles, &c., fittings for, to include
rough, hollow U rims, back-bones, forks,
heads, necks, and spokes, also drop-forgings

| Cards, lithographed, as lithograph stationery | 25 per cent. |

Engineer, has deposited at this office a specification
of an invention for a new or improved apparatus for clothes-
drying.

No. 3401.—THOMAS ELLIS, of Churton Street, Wanganui,
New Zealand, Settler, has deposited at this office a specifica-
tion of an invention for a self-acting candle-extinguisher, to
be called "Ellis's Self-acting Candle-extinguisher."

No. 3402.—ALICE CORNWELL, of Menzies Hotel, William
Street, Melbourne, Victoria, Mining Speculator, has deposited
at this office a specification of an invention for an improve-
ment in materials to be used in galvanic batteries.

No. 3403.—JOSEPH SMITH, of Oamaru, Canterbury, New
Zealand, Miner, has deposited at this office a specification of
an invention for Smith's patent rabbit-snaré.

No. 3404.—ALLAN SKENE, of Riddiford Street, Wellington,
New Zealand, has deposited at this office a specification of
an invention for an improved apparatus for raising and
lowering clothes-lines.

No. 3405.—CHARLES ATKIN, of Auckland, New Zealand,
Coachbuilder, has deposited at this office a specification of
an invention for an improved brake, to be called "Atkin's
Improved Twin-joint Brake."

And I have appointed Thursday, the 28th day of March
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the
said applications and all objections thereto; and I require all
persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any such
Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 13th day of March
next, at this office, particulars in writing of their objections
to any of the said applications, otherwise they will be pre-
cluded from urging the same.

Zealand, Engineer, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for an improved circular re-
volving butter-worker, to be called the "Egmont Butter-
worker."

No. 3407.—SAMUEL SMART and WILLIAM SMART, of Syden-
ham, Canterbury, New Zealand, Contractors, have deposited
at this office a specification of an invention for tar-dis-
tributing machines.

No. 3408.—JAMES KEIR, of Ashburton, New Zealand,
Blacksmith, has deposited at this office a specification of an
invention for Keir's improved coulter.

No. 3409.—HERBERT MALCOLM McNEILL, of Wanganui,
New Zealand, Farmer, has deposited at this office a specifi-
cation of an invention for working a sewing machine either
slow or fast without altering the speed of the driving power,
to be called the "High-and-low-speed Friction Regulator."

No. 3410.—WILLIAM CROOKES, of Kensington Park
Gardens, London, England, Gentleman, has deposited at this
office a specification of an invention for improvements in the
treatment of auriferous ores and in the revivification of the
materials used in such treatment.

No. 3411.—EDWARD WATERS, of No. 75, Chancery Lane,
Melbourne, Victoria, Patent Agent, has deposited at this
office a specification of an invention for a method of and
apparatus for recording and reproducing speech and other
sounds (being a communication to him from the Volta Gra-
phophone Company, of Washington, D.C., United States of
America).

And I have appointed Tuesday, the 2nd day of April
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the
said applications and all objections thereto; and I require
all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any
such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 18th day of
March next, at this office, particulars in writing of their
objections to any of the said applications, otherwise they
will be precluded from urging the same.
