The following remarks apply only to the four principal boroughs:—
The births in August were 267, against 239 in July, an increase of 28.
The total deaths for the four chief towns together amounted to 95, against 103 for July; but there was a great reduction of mortality at Wellington, the deaths having been 26 in August and 44 in July. Under all classes of disease (except zymotic) the deaths at this town were fewer during the later month.
There were 15 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: two males of 71 and 69, and four females of 84, 82, and 72 (two), died at Auckland; three males of 79, 70, and 67 at Wellington; a male of 79, and a female of 70, at Christchurch; two males of 70 and 69, and two females of 74 and 68, at Dunedin.
Specific Febrile or Zymotic Diseases.—There were 11 deaths at the principal towns from these complaints in August, including 7 from diphtheria (1 at Auckland and 6 at Wellington). The mortality at Wellington from diphtheria for the last five months has been as follows: 1 death in April, 1 in May, 3 in June, 1 in July, and 6 in August.
Constitutional Diseases.—The deaths fell from 22 in July to 12 in August. There were 5 deaths from phthisis and 3 from cancer.
Developmental Diseases.—The number of deaths in this class were 5 in August, against 12 in July. One death occurred from premature birth and two from old age, against 6 in the former month from each of these causes.
Local Diseases.—The total number of deaths from these causes was 58, against 55 in July. At Wellington the deaths from diseases of the respiratory system fell from 8 in July to 2 in August, at Auckland they fell from 7 to 6, at Christchurch they increased from 2 to 4, but at Dunedin the number was the same (2) in each month.
Violent Deaths.—Of these there were only 2, one from accidental gunshot wound in the chest, and another from tetanus, cause not stated.
