Description of Trade Mark.

An oblong label, printed in black on white paper, containing a description, in Spanish, English, French, and German, of the uses and qualities of the bitters, and how and in what quantities they are to be taken in particular cases. Between the English and Spanish descriptions a blank space of about one inch wide is left. On this appears in manuscript the following signature, viz., “Dr. J. G. B. The wrapper bears, on a peculiar flap running up the side of the bottle, the following description, in English: “For the better guarantee of the genuineness of these bitters each label contains a facsimile of the signature of Dr. J. G. B. Siegert, the original inventor, and each box will contain a printed circular of the firm of Dr. J. G. B. Siegert and Hijos, with [facsimile of signature], of which please take note.”

This inscription is repeated on the flap in Spanish, German, and French.

LIST OF AWARDS GRANTED TO COLONISTS IN NEW ZEALAND FOR COURAGEOUS ACTS IN SAVING LIFE, TRANSMITTED TO HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR FOR HIS CONSIDERATION AND DISTRIBUTION AMONGST THE RECIPIENTS.

MEREMANA KONUI (aged fifty-eight years), a Maori chief, rescued Mary Kate Twohill, a school-girl, aged thirteen years, from drowning in a water-hole at Kauaeranga Creek, on the 29th January, 1887. Some children were bathing, and Mary Twohill tried to pull her sister out, but failed and sank. The others raised cries for help, when Meremana came, dived, and brought her out in an insensible state. She afterwards recovered. The risk was great on account of the water-hole being full of snags. Awarded a bronze medal.

WILLIAM SMITH (aged twenty years), a ship’s steward, saved Mrs. Robert Hardy from drowning at the Queen Street Wharf, Auckland, on the 11th August, 1886. A cab, in which was Mrs. Hardy, was dragged over the side of the jetty between the s.s. “Rotomahana” and the jetty; Smith jumped overboard, and brought Mrs. Hardy to one of the stringers, until a boat arrived and took them ashore. Awarded a certificate of merit.

ARTHUR NEILD (aged sixteen years), a school-boy, saved from drowning Frank Watson, an infant of two years, at Puriri River, Puriri, on the 22nd January, 1887. Neild, who was at a considerable distance away when he heard the cry of alarm, ran to the spot, jumped in from a very high bank with his clothes on, and, though an indifferent swimmer, rescued the child; the depth of water 12ft., and the infant had sunk. Awarded a bronze medal.

FREDERICK A. H. O’CONNELL (aged thirty years), a farmer, saved Herbert Woodham, a school-teacher, from drowning in the Manawatu River, Foxton, on the 18th February, 1887. Woodham was bathing in the river, and was seized with cramp. He called to O’Connell to help him, and he had to swim about twenty yards before he could render any aid. He brought Woodham to a safe place by swimming with his right hand and holding Woodham up with his left. Awarded a certificate of merit.

WILLIAM LEWIS FINLAYSON (aged twenty-six years), a shepherd, rescued William D. McAndrew from drowning in the River Motaka, Riversglen, Hawke’s Bay, on the 11th December, 1886. McAndrew was bathing, got out of his depth, and, exhausted, sank. Finlayson, who saw the accident, went after him, dived, and brought him to the bank, and restored animation. Awarded a certificate of merit.
