The following remarks apply only to the four principal boroughs:—
The births in December were 212, against 239 in November, a decrease of 27. The deaths in December were 75, against 97 in November, a decrease of 22. This decrease is found at Auckland, where the deaths fell from 26 to 15, and at Wellington, where the numbers were 38 and 19. At Auckland there was a lesser mortality from phthisis, bronchitis, and pneumonia in December (3 deaths) than in November (11 deaths), besides from various other diseases. At Wellington the deaths for December were fewer for nearly all classes of disease. Whooping-cough caused 3 deaths at this town, against 8 in the previous month.
There were 6 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: a male of 72, and 2 females of 73 and 67, died at Auckland; a male of 76 and a female of 67 at Christchurch; and a male of 65 at Dunedin.
Specific Febrile or Zymotic Diseases.—There were 11 deaths in December, against 13 in November. The mortality from whooping-cough fell from 9 deaths to 4.
Constitutional Diseases.—Of 16 deaths, 5 were from phthisis. The total of deaths for November was 26, including 13 from phthisis.
Local Diseases.—These fell from 43 in November to 29 in December. Deaths from croup, bronchitis, pneumonia, and congestion of lungs were only 7 in December, against 20 in November.
The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal specific febrile or zymotic diseases, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong, as being the most important special diseases which give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
