The following remarks apply only to the four principal boroughs:—
The births in May were 264, against 246 in April, an increase of 18. The deaths in May were 95, against 128 in April, a decrease of 33.
There were 7 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: three females of 84, 76, and 72 died at Auckland; a male of 77, and a female of 73, at Wellington; a female of 66 at Christchurch; and a male of 87 at Dunedin.
Specific Febrile or Zymotic Diseases.—These diseases caused 15 deaths in May, against 28 in April. The decrease was chiefly attributable to the smaller number of deaths from diarrhoeal diseases (13 in April and 7 in May), from typhoid fever (7 in April and 5 in May), and to an absence of any deaths in May from venereal diseases.
Constitutional Diseases.—There was a small decrease in the number of deaths in this class—20 in April, 17 in May. Cancer, however, caused the comparatively large number of 7 deaths, the same as in the previous month, and phthisis caused 8 deaths, against 7 in April.
