watercourses hereinafter mentioned and their tributaries to be watercourses for the purposes in the said section mentioned:
Now, therefore, His Excellency Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in exercise of the powers vested in him by the said Act, and acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said colony, doth hereby proclaim and declare that the watercourses known as the Teremakau and Arahuira Rivers, in the Provincial District of Westland, with their respective tributaries, shall be watercourses into which tailings, mining débris, and waste water of every kind used in, upon, or discharged from any claim or licensed holding adjacent to such watercourses or tributaries respectively shall be suffered to flow or be discharged; and, with the like advice and consent, His Excellency doth hereby prescribe that this Proclamation shall take effect on and after Thursday, the second day of August, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-eight.
Given under the hand of His Excellency Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois, Lieutenant-General in Her Majesty’s Army, Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over Her Majesty’s Colony of New Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral of the same; and issued under the Seal of the said Colony, at the Government House, at Wellington, this ninth day of April, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty-eight.

Altering Boundaries of Resident Magistrate’s District of Christchurch, and abolishing District of Lyttelton.

A PROCLAMATION.
WHEREAS by “The Resident Magistrate’s Act, 1867,” it is enacted that it shall be lawful for the Governor from time to time, by Proclamation in the New Zealand Gazette, to constitute throughout the colony, or in any part thereof, districts to be called Resident Magistrates’ districts, and such districts from time to time to abolish, and the boundaries to define and alter, and in any such Proclamation to fix a time on and from which any such district shall be constituted or abolished, as the case may be:
And whereas by Proclamations bearing date the first day of November, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-one, and the nineteenth day of September, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-six, His Excellency the Governor, in pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities so vested in him, did define the boundaries of the Resident Magistrates’ Districts of Lyttelton and Christchurch, as described in the said Proclamations respectively, to be Resident Magistrates’ districts within the meaning and for the purpose of the said Act:
And whereas it is expedient to abolish the said District of Lyttelton, and to alter the boundaries of the said District of Christchurch so defined as aforesaid:
Now, therefore, I, William Francis Drummond Jervois, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities so vested in me as aforesaid, do hereby abolish the said District of Lyttelton, as from the first day of May proximo, and do hereby alter the boundaries of the said District of Christchurch, and define them as described in the Schedule hereto, as and from the said first day of May proximo.
SCHEDULE.
CHRISTCHURCH DISTRICT.
ALL that area in the Provincial District of Canterbury bounded towards the north-east generally by the left bank of the Waimakariri River from the Southern Alps to the sea; thence by the sea to a point midway between Port Levy and Pigeon Bay; thence towards the south-east generally by a right line to Mount Sinclair; thence by the Purau and Akaroa Road to the spur leading from the main range from High Bare Peak; thence by that spur and range to High Bare Peak; thence by the summit of the watershed between the Waikoka Creek and Lake Forsyth to the Tramway Reserve; thence by a right line to the outlet of that lake, and thence by the sea; towards the south-west by the right bank of the Rakaia River; and towards the north-west by the summit of the Southern Alps.
Given under the hand of His Excellency Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois, Lieutenant-General in Her Majesty’s Army, Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over Her Majesty’s Colony of New Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral of the same; and issued under the Seal of the said Colony, at the Government House, at Wellington, this tenth day of April, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty-eight.

Constituting the Borough of Birkenhead under “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886.”

A PROCLAMATION.
WHEREAS by “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886,” the Governor is empowered, by Proclamation, to declare any portion of the Colony of New Zealand to be a borough under the said Act from and after a date to be named in such Proclamation:
Now, therefore, I, William Francis Drummond Jervois, the Governor of the said Colony of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities vested in me by the said Act, do hereby proclaim and declare that the part of the Birkenhead Road District described in the Schedule hereto shall be and the same is hereby constituted, as from the date hereof, a borough under the said Act; and I do further declare that the name of such borough shall be the Borough of Birkenhead, that the number of Councillors of the said borough shall be six, and that the boundaries of the said borough shall be those described in the Schedule hereto.
SCHEDULE.
ALL that area in the Provincial District of Auckland bounded towards the north by Hillyer’s Creek; towards the north-east generally by that creek and Sections Nos. 125, 126, and 127, Parish of Takapuna, a road-line, and Sections Nos. 121 and 152 to the road forming the eastern boundary of Section No. 153; thence by that road to a point in line with the northern boundary of Section No. 57; thence to and by that section to the north-western corner of Sydney Weetman’s portion of said Section No. 57; thence by the northern and north-eastern boundary-lines of that portion and a right line to the eastern corner of Section No. 56; and thence by that section and Little Shoal Bay; and towards the south and south-west by the Waitemata Harbour.
