The following remarks apply only to the four principal boroughs:—
The births in February were 242, against 259 in January, a decrease of 17. The deaths in February were 130,
against 122 in January, an increase of 8. At Auckland the deaths for February were 47, against 43 in January; but the
mortality from zymotic diseases increased from 8 to 20 deaths, caused by cholera, diarrhœa, and dysentery in children,
whooping-cough, and typhoid fever. At Wellington there was a decrease from 41 to 23 deaths, mainly caused by a lesser
mortality from zymotic diseases, chiefly diarrhœa; from constitutional diseases, the principal cause being phthisis; and
various local diseases. At Christchurch there was an increase from 17 to 31 deaths. More deaths occurred from diarrhœa
in February than in January, and there was 1 death from typhoid fever, besides 1 from diphtheria. Deaths from local
diseases increased; and there were in February 3 accidental deaths, but none in the previous month.
The mortality at Dunedin for February does not call for special remark.
There were 13 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: three males of 78, 77, and 71, and two females of 70 and 67,
died at Auckland; a female of 70 at Wellington; two males of 75 and 67, and three females of 78, 75, and 71, at Christ-
church; and two females of 70 and 66 at Dunedin.
