No. 2788.—JOHN HENRY RICHARDSON DINSMORE, of the City of Liverpool, in the County of Lancaster, England, Engineer, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for improvements in the manufacture of illuminating gas and apparatus therefor.

No. 2789.—JOSEPH ENOCH WREN, of No. 15, Bond Street, Sydney, New South Wales, Engineer, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for improvements in the manufacture of illuminating gas for domestic and other purposes.

I have appointed Tuesday, the 22nd day of May next, at 11 o’clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the said applications and all objections thereto; and I require all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 7th day of May next, at this office, particulars in writing of their objections to the said applications, otherwise they will be precluded from urging the same.

No. 2791.—ROBERT STANLEY, of Marrickville, near Sydney, New South Wales, Gentleman, and HORATIO WRAGGE and NOEL BRODHURST HILL, both of 19, Hunter Street, Sydney, aforesaid, Importers, have deposited at this office a specification of an invention for an improved compound specially suitable as a substitute for chicory.

I have appointed Thursday, the 20th day of September next, at 11 o’clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the said applications and all objections thereto; and I require all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 5th day of September next, at this office, particulars in writing of their objections to the said applications, otherwise they will be precluded from urging the same.

No. 2794. JOHN DANIEL ARNABOLDI, of Cambridge East, Auckland, New Zealand, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for use in connection with wire-fencing, to be called “The Cambridge Wire-strainer.”

No. 2795.—ANDREW McSHAIN, of Saddle Hill, New Zealand, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for an improved combination dredge for gold-mining and other minerals.

No. 2796.—JOHN INGLIS WRIGHT, of Dunedin, New Zealand, Stationer, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for the protection of bank notes from forgery.

No. 2797.—PETER REID, of Auckland, New Zealand, Gentleman, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for a raft, to be called “Reid’s Patent Safety Raft.”

Te Makarini Scholarships.—Supplementary Examination.

TWO scholarships of the yearly value of £35, tenable until the end of 1889, are offered for competition. These scholarships are open to all Maoris that are under fifteen years of age at the end of the month preceding the date of the examination, and that have attended a Native village school for the previous twelve months. These scholarships are offered for competition to Maori youths, on the conditions laid down in the regulations of the Trustees of the Te Makarini Scholarships Fund, as printed in the Native Schools Code, 1886. The examination will be held at convenient centres on the 19th and 20th March, 1888.

Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers, send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education Department, Wellington, of their intention to present themselves for examination. Such notice must be posted not later than the 25th February next.

Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be obtained from teachers of Native schools and boarding institutions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the Secretary to the Education Department.
