The following remarks apply only to the four principal boroughs:—
The births in November were 239, against 321 in October, a decrease of 82. The deaths in November were 97, against 92 in October, an increase of 5. At Wellington the deaths rose from 26 in October to 38 in November, the increase being caused by greater mortality from whooping-cough (8 deaths) and from various constitutional diseases (11 deaths).
There were 13 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: a male of 81, and 4 females of 80, 75 (2), and 70, died at Auckland; 2 males of 78 and 75, and 2 females of 75 and 70, at Wellington; a male of 71 at Christchurch; and 3 males of 85, 70, and 66 at Dunedin.
Specific Febrile or Zymotic Diseases.—From this class of diseases there were 13 deaths, against 7 in October; 9 of the 13 deaths were from whooping-cough, which was particularly fatal at Wellington.
Constitutional Diseases.—Of 26 deaths, 11 were at Wellington. Of the total deaths, 13 were from phthisis, against 12 in the previous month, and 4 from cancer, against 3 in October.
Local Diseases.—There were 43 deaths, against 49 in October. Diseases of the respiratory system caused 20 deaths, against 21 in the previous month, bronchitis being the principal cause in each instance.
Violent Deaths.—These were 4 in number, 2 accidental and 2 suicidal. A child was strangled by the rope of its swing, and a man killed by a blow from a brass buckle received in a street disturbance. Both suicides were at Wellington. The poisoning was effected by means of the preparation termed “Rough on Rats.”
The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal specific febrile or zymotic diseases, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong, as being the most important special diseases which give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
