NOTES FOR JANUARY.

Auckland.—Fine weather, with prevailing N.E. wind and moderate; heavy rain recorded on 19th, 1·16in.; thunder
on 19th.
Rotorua.—Very fine bright weather, except heavy rain on 18th, 2·19in. recorded on 19th; prevailing northerly wind.
Wellington.—A very fine month, small rainfall, the maximum recorded on 2nd, ·045in.; prevailing N.W. wind, at
times fresh, but on the whole moderate; stormy on 12th from N.E.; thunder and lightning on evening of 1st, with
showers; foggy on 29th.
Lincoln.—Fine weather generally; maximum rainfall recorded on 14th, ·905in.; prevailing N.E. wind and often
strong; stormy from N.E. on 18th; thunder on 12th and 13th; hail on 13th; fog on 6th, 16th, and 17th.
Dunedin.—Tolerably fine early part, but showery from middle to end, and close weather; maximum rain recorded on
13th, ·586in.; wind prevailed from E. and N.E. and moderate, except strong from N.E. on 30th; thunder on 1st; fog
on 7th.
General Remarks.—Fine warm weather throughout this month, with little rain and moderate wind. Earthquakes
recorded at Wellington on 16th, at 4 a.m., slight, and on 31st, at 6.20 p.m., slight, E. and W. Comet observed in south at
Lincoln on 25th and 26th, at 10.30 p.m., in S.W. horizon.

NOTES FOR FEBRUARY.

Auckland.—Weather fine, showers in early part and middle of month; maximum rainfall on 8th, 1·19in.; wind
prevailed from N.E., moderate, except on 5th, strong; thunder on 8th and 9th.
Rotorua.—Some heavy showers early part, middle, and end of month, but otherwise fine; maximum rainfall recorded
on 28th, 1·04in.; prevailing northerly wind and moderate.
Wellington.—Early part of month strong N.W. wind and showery; from 9th to end of month generally fine, with
variable wind, except strong from N.W. on 18th, 19th, 20th, and 23rd, and a few light showers; prevailing wind from
N.W.; maximum rainfall on 6th, ·500in.
Lincoln.—Little rain during this month and generally pleasant weather, with prevailing S.W. and N.E. winds, and
strong from latter quarter on 4th, 18th, and 19th; thunder on 3rd, 20th, and 28th.
Dunedin.—Weather generally fine, with light showers; prevailing N.E. wind, and strong gale from that quarter on
4th; maximum rainfall recorded on 20th, ·65in.; thunder on 19th; hail on 19th.
General Remarks.—On the whole, fine bright warm weather, with little rainfall and moderate wind.

NOTES FOR MARCH.

Auckland.—Very fine weather, with little rain; maximum rainfall recorded on 28th, ·24in.; prevailing S. and S.W.
winds and moderate.
Rotorua.—Very fine bright weather, with slight showers at intervals; maximum rain on 2nd, ·22in.; prevailing winds
from N., S., and S.W., and moderate.
Wellington.—Showery during first part of month, fine during middle with light showers at intervals, towards end of
month also showery; maximum rain recorded on 28th, ·36in.; prevailing N.W. wind, and strong on eight days from that
quarter; fog on 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th; altogether fine weather, with little rain for time of year.
Lincoln.—Slight rainfall, and on the whole fine weather; maximum rain recorded on 17th, ·777; prevailing N.E. wind
and moderate, except 12th, 14th, and 24th, strong; thunder on 27th; sleet on 27th; fog on 11th and 14th.
Dunedin.—Changeable weather, with light showers; maximum rain recorded on 28th, ·380in.; prevailing S.W. wind
and light, fresh wind on 9th and 25th from W.; hail on 27th.
General Remarks.—The weather during this period has been generally fine, with small rainfall and moderate wind.

NOTES FOR APRIL.

Auckland.—Showery in beginning and towards end of month; maximum rainfall recorded on 22nd, ·76in.; prevailing
N.E. wind, and strong on 20th and 29th.
Rotorua.—Showery, with intervals of fine weather; maximum rain on 3rd, 2·20in.; wind variable and moderate.
Wellington.—Showery early part, then fine weather (except heavy rain on night of 12th) until 21st, when rain com-
me need and continued showery almost to end of month; maximum rain recorded on 30th, ·53in.; prevailing N.W. wind,
and strong on eight days from that quarter.
Lincoln.—Fine weather, with little rain; maximum rainfall recorded on 13th, ·715in.; prevailing N.E. and S.W.
winds, and moderate.
Dunedin.—Fine, with light showers; greatest rain recorded on 4th, ·944in.; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds, and
light.
General Remarks.—A fine month throughout, with rainfall less than the average, and moderate wind. Earthquake
at Rotorua on 28th, slight, and at Wellington on 12th, E., and long. Meteor observed in south, on 29th, to east.

NOTES FOR MAY.

Auckland.—Very wet weather during this month; maximum rainfall recorded on 10th, 1·11in.; prevailing S. and
S.W. winds, and N. and N.E., and strong from the latter on 9th, 10th, and 19th.
Rotorua.—Very showery weather; maximum rain recorded on 11th, 2·30in.; prevailing S. wind; strong N. and
N.E. gale on 10th and 11th, and thunder; fog on 12th.
Wellington.—A very wet unpleasant month, very heavy rain in early part, 1·62in. recorded on 2nd, 1·25in. on 3rd, and
1·65in. on 4th, the maximum for month, also heavy rain during latter part; prevailing S.E. wind in first half and N.W.
in latter, and strong on 3rd, 19th, and 20th from S.E., and on 24th from N.W.
Lincoln.—Very showery weather, the greatest rain recorded on 26th, ·513in.; prevailing S.W. wind, and also N.E.,
and strong from latter on 10th, 11th, and 12th; fog on 13th and 14th.
Dunedin.—A wet month; maximum rainfall on 11th, 1·210in.; wind prevailed from S.W. and N.E., and strong on
9th and 10th from latter.
General Remarks.—Rainfall considerably in excess of average, and on the whole an unpleasant month, with strong
wind. Earthquake recorded at Wellington on 13th, very slight, at noon, and on 22nd, at 2 a.m., slight.

NOTES FOR JUNE.

Auckland.—Showery almost throughout the month; maximum rainfall on 19th, 1·87in.; prevailing N.E. wind, and
strong on 6th and 7th; thunder on 9th.
Rotorua.—Fine early part and towards end of month, but otherwise very showery; maximum rain recorded on 8th,
2·44in.; prevailing south wind; gale from N.E. on 8th; thunder on 9th, 10th, and 11th.
Wellington.—Early part fine calm weather, frosty nights; from 7th to end of month showery, with very heavy rain
during the middle and latter part, 1·20in. recorded on 16th, the maximum for month; prevailing S.E. wind, and generally
moderate or calm, except strong from S.W. on 16th, from S.E. on 18th, and S.W. on 28th; hail also on 28th.
Lincoln.—Fine up to 9th, then showery remainder of month; maximum recorded on 24th, 1·617in.; winds prevailed
from N.E. and S.W., and generally fresh; strong N.E. on 14th; slight snow on 25th; fog on 9th and 23rd.
Dunedin.—From 1st to 10th fine, remainder of month very wet; maximum rainfall registered on 16th, 2·760in.;
prevailing N.E. wind, and strong on 16th and 22nd, otherwise moderate; fog on 11th.
General Remarks.—Early part of month at most places fine, but on the whole wet with occasional strong winds.
Earthquake at Rotorua on 21st, at 1.50 p.m., slight, and at Wellington on 11th, at 9.30 p.m., sharp, and 27th, E. to W.,
at 1.50 p.m., sharp.
