The following remarks apply only to the four principal boroughs:—
The births in September were 225 against 284 in August, a decrease of 59. The deaths in September were 98
against 122 in August, a decrease of 24. The decrease in the total mortality at the chief towns is found chiefly at Auck-
land and Dunedin. In Auckland deaths from local disease of various kinds fell from 21 to 10. At Dunedin the decrease
was on various classes of disease in small numbers.
There were 16 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: 4 females of 88, 85, 78, and 77 died at Auckland; 5
males of 79, 78 (2), 71, and 69, and 2 females of 85 and 68, at Wellington; a male of 76 and a female of 80 at Christchurch;
and 2 males of 68 and 67, and a female of 86, at Dunedin.
Specific Febrile or Zymotic Diseases.—The mortality for September was slight (8 deaths), but diphtheria was fatal at
each town, 4 deaths in all. There were no deaths from dysentery and diarrhœa, and only 2 from typhoid fever at
Wellington.
Constitutional Diseases.—The total number of deaths was 25, being 1 in excess of the number for August; but deaths
from phthisis fell from 13 to 8.
Local Diseases.—There were 46 deaths from this class of disease, or 17 fewer than in August. Diseases of the nervous
system were considerably less fatal in the latter month, and there was an absence of deaths from childbirth.
Violent Deaths.—These were 5, all from accidental causes. One case was that of a child dying from the effects of
circumcision.
The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal
specific febrile or zymotic diseases, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These
causes of death have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong, as being the most important
special diseases which give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely
connected with sanitary condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
