The following remarks apply only to the four principal boroughs:—

The births in December were 242 against 294 in November, a decrease of 52. The deaths in December were 88 against 81 in November, an increase of 7.

There were 13 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: 4 males of 88, 75, 66, and 65, and 2 females of 73 and 71, died at Auckland; 1 male of 77 and 1 female of 68 at Wellington; 1 female of 75 at Christchurch; and 4 males of 76, 71, 70, and 65 at Dunedin.

Specific Febrile or Zymotic Diseases.—The deaths from these diseases were slightly more numerous in December than in the previous month. Of the 11 deaths in December, 5 were from diarrhoea. Typhoid fever caused 1 death in Wellington, and gastric fever 3 deaths of children in Auckland.

Constitutional Diseases.—There were 20 deaths in this class in December, of which phthisis caused 10, and cancer 7.

Local Diseases.—The deaths from these diseases amounted to 36 in December against 37 in November. Of these deaths, 6 occurred in December from diseases of the circulatory system against 5 in the previous month, and 7 deaths occurred from diseases of the respiratory system against 14 in November.

Violence.—Six deaths occurred from accidents of various kinds, and 1 death was caused by suicide.
