NOTES FOR JULY.

Auckland.—Showery in early part and middle of month, the maximum fall on 12th ·85in.; prevailing southerly wind and moderate, strong from N.E. on 30th and 31st; some pleasant weather during month; thunder on 4th; fog on 8th, 9th, and 28th.

Rotorua.—Heavy rain middle of month, the maximum 1·68in. on 12th, and showery towards end, otherwise fine; prevailing S.W. wind and moderate.

Wellington.—Fine up to 11th, with moderate winds, chiefly N.W., except heavy rain on night of 3rd with thunder and hail, and strong wind on 11th; during middle of month showery and cold, but moderate wind or calm; wet and unpleasant from 23rd to 26th, S.E. and S.W. winds and cold; from 27th to end fine bright weather; strong wind from N.W. on 29th; foggy on 9th, 16th, and 31st; maximum rain on 25th 1·20in.; prevailing N.W. wind.

Lincoln.—Generally fine weather with occasional showers; maximum rain on 15th ·093in.; variable winds, and frequently calm; fog on 9th and 29th.

Dunedin.—Fine weather; small rainfall, the maximum on 15th ·46in.; rather changeable up to 16th, then fine to end of month; prevailing S.W. wind and moderate; snow on 15th.

General Remarks.—Rather showery, but on the whole fine weather and rather colder than is usual for this month. Earthquakes—at Rotorua, frequent tremors from 7th to 14th; at Wellington on 12th, at 7.30 a.m., slight, N. and S.; and at Dunedin on 2nd.

NOTES FOR AUGUST.

Auckland.—A very wet month, almost constant showers, the maximum recorded on 2nd and 18th ·58in.; prevailing S.W. and N.W. winds, and strong on 7th, 8th, 15th, and 26th from latter quarter; thunder on 18th and 27th; hail on 18th.

Rotorua.—A wet month, the maximum rainfall recorded on 7th 1·18in.; winds chiefly S. and S.W.; snow on 27th.

Wellington.—With the exception of a few days at the end of the month the weather during this period was exceedingly wet and unpleasant, constant showers with cold winds, which prevailed from N.W., S.E., and S.W., and strong on four days; snow on hills on 5th, 25th, 26th, and 27th; hail on 3rd, 4th, 25th, and 26th; maximum rainfall on 8th 1·20in.

Lincoln.—Very showery weather almost throughout, the greatest rainfall recorded on 8th 1·135in; wind prevailed from N.E. and S.W; thunder on 27th; snow on 4th, 25th, 26th, and 27th, and hail on 27th; an unpleasant month.

Dunedin.—Wet throughout, but during middle of month very heavy rain, causing floods from N.E., the heaviest rainfall on record; snow on five days; fog on 22nd; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds, and strong on 16th, 17th, and 18th from N.E.; rain recorded on 18th 4·26in., and on 19th 4·60in.

General Remarks.—An unusually wet unpleasant month—serious floods in the South; very cold and severe, with frequent snow-storms and strong wind. Earthquake at Rotorua on 29th, at 9 p.m.

NOTES FOR SEPTEMBER.

Auckland.—Early part showery; maximum rain on 4th ·45in.; prevailing S.W. and W. winds and moderate, except strong on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th from W., and on 8th and 9th from N.E., changing to S.W.; thunder on 4th; latter part fine.

Rotorua.—Very showery unpleasant weather generally, the maximum rainfall on 9th 3·10in.; prevailing S.W. wind; fog on 1st; an occasional fine day.

Wellington.—From 1st to 8th fine but dull, with slight rain, and light wind from E. and S.E.; from 8th to 16th showery, and at times squally, chiefly from S., with thunder on 11th, and hail on 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th, and snow on hills on 14th; from 17th to 23rd fine, with N.W. wind; remainder of month showery and rather windy, chiefly from N.W.; prevailing N.W. wind; maximum rainfall recorded on 9th ·58in.

Lincoln.—Generally showery in early and latter part; greatest rainfall recorded on 25th ·653in.; some fine weather during latter half of month; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds and moderate, except strong from former quarter on 8th and 26th; hail on 13th.

Dunedin.—Frequent showers but small total rainfall, maximum occurring on 24th ·75in.; light wind chiefly from N.E. and S.W., and frequent calms; fog on 17th.

General Remarks.—On the whole a showery unpleasant month, and strong wind. Earthquakes at Rotorua on 20th, at 6.15 a.m., smart; and Wellington on 3rd, at noon, two smart shocks E. to W., and on 7th, at 7 a.m., slight, E. to W.

NOTES FOR OCTOBER.

Auckland.—A showery month, about the average total fall, the maximum recorded on 28th ·61in.; strong wind on 6th from S.E., on 18th and 19th from N.E., and on 28th from W., otherwise moderate and variable; intervals of fine.

Rotorua.—Very heavy rainfall during this period, although fine early part and middle of month; maximum rainfall on 20th 2·25in.; variable wind and moderate.

Wellington.—On the whole a showery unpleasant month, with prevailing N.W. wind and frequently stormy; maximum rain recorded on 5th 1·60in,; thunder and vivid lightening on 25th.

Lincoln.—Showery with intervals of fine; maximum rain recorded on 5th ·752in.; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds and generally strong, but stormy on 12th, 13th, and 25th from N.W.; hail on 29th.

Dunedin.—Changeable and showery weather; greatest rain recorded on 10th ·856in.; prevailing wind from S.W. and moderate; on 17th and 18th strong wind from N.E.; snow on 11th; fog on 20th, 21st, and 25th.

General Remarks.—A cold wet month with very unsettled weather and frequently stormy. Earthquakes—at Rotorua on 25th, at 11.15 a.m., N.W. to S.E.; at Wellington on 11th, at 4.12 p.m., slight, and 13th, about 8.30 p.m., very slight.

NOTES FOR NOVEMBER.

Auckland.—Fine weather with light showers, maximum rainfall on 29th ·49in.; prevailing N.E. wind, and strong on 21st, 22nd, 26th, 27th, and 28th from that quarter.

Rotorua.—On the whole fine weather with pleasant showers at intervals, the maximum rain recorded on 29th ·47in.; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds.

Wellington.—Weather generally fine, but very strong wind from N.W. prevailed, frequently reaching strong gales; showers at intervals during the month; the maximum rainfall recorded on 22nd 1·60in.

Lincoln.—A fine month; small rainfall, the maximum recorded on 11th ·308in.; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds; severe gale from N.W. on 8th, and on 12th, 26th, and 27th from N.E.; fog on 23rd.

Dunedin.—Fine from 1st to 8th, but generally changeable weather; maximum rain recorded on 29th ·988in.; prevailing N.E. wind and strong on 26th and 27th; hail on 9th and 10th; fog on 5th.

General Remarks.—Fine seasonable weather during this month, and rainfall under the average. Earthquakes—at Rotorua on 5th, at 6 a.m., and on 17th, at 1.30 a.m. and 5.10 a.m.: at Wellington on 10th, at 5 a.m., E. and W., slight; 14th, two slight shocks morning and afternoon; 26th, at 1 a.m., very smart, and at 3 p.m., E. and W., slight.

NOTES FOR DECEMBER.

Auckland.—Very fine dry weather; the maximum rain on 11th ·08in.; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds and moderate.

Rotorua.—Very fine weather; a few showers in middle of month, the maximum fall recorded on 11th ·29in.; prevailing westerly winds.

Wellington.—Fine weather up to the 9th, but with strong N.W. wind; from 10th to 20th showery, with N.W. and S.E. winds, and often strong; the maximum rainfall recorded on 11th ·65in.; remainder of month very fine, warm, dry weather, with light wind chiefly from S.E.

Lincoln.—Generally fine, though showery during middle of month; the maximum rainfall recorded on 13th ·761in.; prevailing N.E. wind and frequently strong; thunder on 12th; hail on 12th.

Dunedin.—Showery up to middle of month and fine after; maximum rain recorded on 12th·886in.; moderate wind, except strong on 1st and 14th from S.W. and on 20th from N.E.; hail on 12th.

General Remarks.—A fine month, with very little rainfall, except in South; wind frequently strong and prevailing from W. and N.E. Earthquake at Rotorua on 28th, smart, at 10.20 a.m.
