The following remarks apply only to the four principal boroughs:—
The births in February were 246 against 277 in January, a decrease of 31. The deaths in February were 129 against 108 in January, an increase of 21.
There were 9 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: 3 females of 82 (two) and 71 died at Auckland; a female of 76 at Wellington; 1 male of 67, and 3 females of 74, 72 and 65, at Christchurch; and a female of 67 at Dunedin.
Specific Febrile or Zymotic Diseases.—The deaths from these diseases increased from 28 in January to 49 in February, the greater mortality being chiefly due to the increased fatality from diarrhoeal diseases, which caused 37 deaths in February against 24 in January. Of these, 34 were of children under 5 years of age. The mortality from diarrhoeal diseases was greater in February, 1886, the deaths then having been 40 in number, but less in February, 1885, when there were 29 of these deaths. The majority of these deaths occurred in Auckland (15) and Wellington (14). There was not a death from diarrhoeal diseases in Dunedin. Typhoid and gastric fever, the latter term being another name for typhoid fever, caused 6 deaths, of which 3 occurred at Auckland and 1 at each of the other three boroughs.
Constitutional Diseases.—The mortality in this class was slightly less than in the previous month, viz., 16 deaths against 18. Cancer, however, caused 4 deaths in February against 2 in January, but phthisis only caused 4 deaths against 9 in the previous month.
