Act, 1886," with respect to holding a certificate of underground
manager, as it is my opinion that the workings of the said
mine do not require a certificated manager at the present
time.

ORDER IN COUNCIL.

At the Government House, at Wellington, this
twenty-first day of December, 1886.

Present:

HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR IN COUNCIL.

WHEREAS by "The Coal Mines Act, 1886"
(hereinafter termed "the said Act"), it
is enacted that it shall be lawful for the Governor
from time to time, by Order in Council, to make,
alter, or revoke regulations for, inter alia, prescrib-
ing the terms and conditions for the issue of certi-
ficate of competency for the office of underground
manager of a mine, and for regulating the exami-
inations with respect to the necessary knowledge
and requirements in working a mine for the pur-
pose of ascertaining the fitness of any person
applying for any such certificate: And whereas
it is expedient to make the regulations hereinafter
set forth:

Now, therefore, I, William Francis Drummond
Jervois, the Governor of the Colony of New Zea-
land, in exercise of the power and authority con-
ferred by the said Act, and acting by and with the
advice and consent of the Executive Council of the
said colony, do hereby make the following regula-
tions; and doth declare that such regulations shall
come into force on the twenty-first day of Decem-
ber, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-six.

REGULATIONS MADE UNDER "THE COAL-MINES
ACT, 1886."

Underground Manager.

  1. THE Governor shall appoint a Board of Ex-
    aminers, consisting of not less than three nor more
    than five persons, three of whom to form a
    quorum, to examine, or cause to be examined,
    applicants for certificates of underground mana-
    gers on the subjects hereinafter specified.

The said Board may appoint supervisors from
time to time to conduct such examinations, and
shall grant certificates, in the form set forth in
Schedule A hereto annexed, to such persons as
shall have passed the prescribed examinations and
shall have produced certificates of character which
shall be satisfactory to the Board.

Every application for a certificate as an under-
ground manager shall be made in writing under
the hand of the applicant to the Secretary of the
Board of Examiners, Mines Department, Wel-
ington, accompanied with a fee of £1 sterling,
together with a certificate that the applicant is
not less than twenty-one years of age, and that he
has been employed for a period of not less than
three years in a coal-mine.

The subjects for examination shall be as fol-
lows:—

(1.) On the sinking of shafts and construction
of main roadways, opening out a mine,
and the division of a mine into dis-
tricts :
