  5. Sets of papers for the examination in both the literary
    and military subjects will be forwarded in due course, in
    sealed envelopes, to the Governors of the respective colonies,
    who will convene Boards, the duty of which will be to see
    that the papers are fairly worked by the candidates. The
    papers will then be returned without delay to the Director-
    General of Military Education, War Office, London, for
    adjudication.
    The Governor of the colony will notify to the War Office,
    through the Secretary of State for the Colonies, as early as
    possible in each year, whether he has any duly-qualified
    candidates to nominate, and will at the same time state how
    many sets of papers he will be likely to require for their
    examination.
  6. Until further notice, two army commissions will be
    allotted to each of the under-mentioned colonies annually:
    New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria, Queensland,
    New Zealand, and Cape of Good Hope.
  7. In the event of the number of candidates nominated
    by the Governor in a colony at any time exceeding the
    allotted number of commissions, the selection will be de-
    cided by competition in the military portion of the prescribed
    examination.

    Alterations and Additions to the Scale of Fares and Charges
    in force on the New Zealand Railways.
    IN accordance with section 144 of “The Public Works
    Act, 1882,” I, Edward Richardson, the Minister for
    Public Works, do hereby make the following alterations and
    additions to the scale of charges, to come into force from
    and after the 29th day of November, 1886:—
    PART IV.—LOCAL RATES.
    WANGANUI SECTION.
    Goods of Classes A, B, C, D, E, between Palmerston and
    Longburn, booked between Palmerston and stations on the
    Wellington-Manawatu Railway Company's line, will be
    charged 2s. 6d. per ton; and wool 6d. per bale undumped,
    1s. per bale double-dumped.
    As witness my hand this twenty-third day of Novem-
    ber, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-six.

    Rewards offered for the Discovery of New Goldfields.—
    Amended Conditions.
    Mines Department,
    Wellington, 16th March, 1885.
    REWARDS are offered for the discovery of new gold-
    fields, upon the conditions set forth hereunder, payable
    out of the parliamentary vote of £2,500.

    AMENDED CONDITIONS.
  8. THE maximum sum offered as a reward for any proved
    discovery of a new goldfield in accordance with these condi-
    tions is £500; but, if the total sum claimed as rewards in
    any one year exceeds the parliamentary vote, the amount
    available only will be divided equally.
  9. The newly-discovered goldfield, if in alluvial ground,
    must be situated not less than ten miles from the nearest
    alluvial gold-workings, or, if in quartz, not less than five miles
    from the nearest existing quartz-mines.
  10. No grant will be paid upon any application until it
    shall have been proved that not less than 20,000 ounces of
    gold have been extracted from the new goldfield within two
    years from the registration of the discovery, if in alluvial
    workings, and, if in quartz-workings, proof of a similar yield
    from this source within three years from such registration
    will be required.
  11. Any person discovering new gold-workings, and being
    desirous of obtaining a reward, shall immediately forward a
    written report of such discovery, with full particulars, to the
    Warden or Resident Magistrate of the district within which
    such discovery shall be situated, and the Warden or Resident
    Magistrate shall forthwith register the report as an applica-
    tion for reward.
  12. No prospecting is allowed upon Native land without the
    approval in writing of the Native Minister, or of some one
    appointed by him in that behalf.
    Prospectors going upon Native land without the consent
    of the owners are liable to the penalties imposed by the Acts
    relating to goldfields, and will forfeit all claim to reward.
    Additional Regulation as to Payment of Rewards for Dis-
    covery of New Goldfields.

    THE following additional regulation for the payment of
    rewards for the discovery of new goldfields, recom-
    mended by the Goldfields Committee on the 22nd June, 1886,
    having been adopted by the Government, is published for
    general information.
    This regulation applies to the notifications published in
    the New Zealand Gazette of the 19th March and 29th
    October, 1885, offering rewards for gold discoveries.

    ADDITIONAL REGULATION.
    No claim for a reward for the discovery of gold will be con-
    sidered by the Goldfields Committee unless such claim be
    made within one year from the date of the discovery.
    Bonus for Canned and Cured Fish for Export.
    Treasury Department,
    Wellington, 10th November, 1885.
    IT is hereby notified that bonuses under “The Fisheries
    Encouragement Act, 1885,” as set forth in the following
    sections (Nos. 8, 9, and 10) of that Act, will be paid subject
    to the conditions named therein, and in the regulations
    contained in the Order in Council of even date herewith.

  13. In order to encourage the production and curing of fish
    for export, the Colonial Treasurer shall during the next
    seven years after the passing of this Act, without further
    appropriation by Parliament, pay out of the Consolidated
    Fund to any person who shall prepare canned and cured fish
    for export, and actually export the same from the colony, a
    bonus or bonuses upon the quantity of canned and cured fish
    prepared and exported by such person as hereinafter men-
    tioned, that is to say,--
