NOTES FOR JANUARY.

Auckland.—Very fine dry weather, with prevailing N.E. wind, and strong on 10th and 11th; from 26th to end of month showery; wind N.W., and strong on 26th and 30th; maximum rain on 27th 1·20in.; thunder on 27th.

Rotorua.—Showery weather, with intervals of fine; prevailing N.E. wind, and moderate; maximum rain on 29th 1·90in.; thunder on 4th.

Wellington.—From 1st to 12th fine weather and very warm at times; showery from 13th to 18th; then fine again until night of 25th, when it rained heavily, and continued wet on 26th; fine on 28th, but heavy rain on night of 29th, 1·75in. recorded on 30th, and showery remainder of month; prevailing N.W. and S.E. winds, and generally moderate; oppressive weather during latter part of month.

Lincoln.—Fine weather; very slight rain, the maximum recorded on 26th ·195in.; prevailing N.E. wind, and strong on 10th and 21st, otherwise moderate; thunder on 17th.

Dunedin.—Fine, with little rainfall, the maximum recorded on 28th ·394in.; prevailing N.E. wind, and moderate, except strong on 9th.

GENERAL REMARKS.—A fine month, with moderate rain; wind generally from N.E., and moderate; temperature about the average. Earthquake at Rotorua on 26th at 4.30 p.m., slight. Meteor in South on 11th.

NOTES FOR FEBRUARY.

Auckland.—Fine early part of month; heavy rain during middle, 1·67in. recorded on 19th and 1·03in. on 20th; prevailing N.E. wind, and strong on five days; thunder on 6th; latter part fine.

Rotorua.—Generally showery weather, with a few fine days during middle and end of month; maximum rainfall on 20th 1·94in.; prevailing N.E. and N.W. winds, and moderate; thunder on 26th.

Wellington.—Fine on 1st and 2nd; on night of 3rd showery from N.W.; from 4th to 8th fine and bright; heavy rain on 9th, ·493in. falling before noon, and slight thunder; from 10th to 16th pleasant weather, with N.W. wind; from 17th to 19th dull and showery, ·66in. rain recorded on the 18th, being the maximum for month; remainder of month fine, bright, and warm weather, with light N.E. and N.W. winds, except strong from S.W. on 27th, and from N.W. on 25th; altogether a fine month.

Lincoln.—A fine month, with little rainfall, except 1·03in. recorded on 10th; wind prevailed from N.E., and strong on 2nd, 7th, and 8th; fog on 26th.

Dunedin.—Fine, with light showers during latter part of month; maximum rainfall recorded on 21st ·32in.; fog on 25th; prevailing N.E. wind, and light.

GENERAL REMARKS.—Generally fine weather, with little rainfall, except in North; wind moderate, and from N.E.; temperature above the average.

NOTES FOR MARCH.

Auckland.—A fine month, with a few showers in early and latter part; maximum rain on 25th ·35in.; wind variable, and moderate.

Rotorua.—Very slight rainfall, the maximum recorded on 25th ·41in.; a fine month, with moderate winds from S. and S.W.

Wellington.—Fine weather almost throughout this month; very slight total rainfall, heavy showers during night of 26th, ·92in. recorded on 27th, the maximum for month; prevailing N.W. wind, and moderate on the whole.

Lincoln.—Generally showery, especially during latter part, maximum fall being ·54in. on 27th; wind variable, strong from S.W. on 26th; hail on 12th; fog on 16th, 17th, 18th, and 22nd.

Dunedin.—A wet month, the maximum rainfall on 14th ·91in.; light winds, prevailing from S.W., except strong from S.W. on 11th, and from N.E. on 18th; fog on 4th.

GENERAL REMARKS.—In the North rainfall below the average, but in the South rather in excess; temperature generally below the average; a tolerably fine month. Earthquake at Rotorua on 30th at 1 a.m., slight.

NOTES FOR APRIL.

Auckland.—Fine weather, with showers at intervals, heavy showers during 8th and 9th, 1·14in. recorded on 9th, the maximum for month; wind variable, and moderate except strong on 16th from N.E. and on 30th from W.

Rotorua.—Heavy rain at times, but some fine weather; maximum rainfall on 10th 1·40in.; prevailing N.E. and S. winds and moderate, strong from N.W. on 30th.

Wellington.—Early part fine; on 11th wind changed from N.W. to S. with heavy rain, 1·70in. recorded on 12th, the maximum for the month; then fine until 17th, when rain came on from N.W. and continued until 19th, 1·01in. recorded on 19th; showery again on 22nd and 23rd from N.W.; fine again until 28th, when heavy rain fell from S.E.; 1·4in. registered on 29th; prevailing wind from N.W., and frequently strong; thunder on 30th.

Lincoln.—Generally fine, but towards latter part heavy rain; 1·447in. recorded on 29th, and 2·350in. on 30th; variable winds and moderate.

Dunedin.—Showery weather, with intervals of very fine; maximum rain on 30th 1·52in.; moderate winds, chiefly from S.W., often calm; strong breeze on 1st from S.W., and on 5th from N.E.; hail on 14th; fog on 3rd.

GENERAL REMARKS.—On the whole fine, though total rainfall above the average; winds moderate generally, the temperature rather above the average. Earthquakes at Rotorua on 22nd at 3 p.m., 28th at 4.30 a.m., and 30th at 5.30 p.m., and at Wellington on 19th at 9.25 p.m., all slight.

NOTES FOR MAY.

Auckland.—Frequent showers in early part, but small total rainfall, the maximum recorded on 4th ·46in.; winds prevailed from S. and S.W., and moderate; strong on 1st from W. with rain.

Rotorua.—Pleasant weather, with a few showers in beginning and middle of month, the maximum rainfall being ·76in. on 1st; thunder on 13th; fog on 29th.

Wellington.—Very showery unpleasant weather from the 1st to the 20th, the maximum rainfall recorded on the 14th 3·400in.; strong wind on 15th and 16th from S.W., also on 19th and 20th from N.W.; remainder of month fine with light winds, chiefly N.W., except on 28th and 29th, when strong from that quarter; thunder and hail on 3rd; foggy on 9th, 10th, and 11th.

Lincoln.—Very wet in early part, the maximum rainfall on 15th 3·114in.; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds, and strong from latter quarter on 14th, 15th, and 16th; fog on 25th and 30th; latter part of month very fine.

Dunedin.—With the exception of a few days, very showery weather, the maximum rainfall recorded on 1st 1·70in.; prevailing N.E. wind, and strong on 11th and 21st; thunder on 21st; fog on 2nd, 4th, and 31st.

GENERAL REMARKS.—In the extreme North small rainfall, but otherwise rain in excess and generally unpleasant weather with frequent squalls. Comet observed in south, direction W.

NOTES FOR JUNE.

Auckland.—A showery month; some fine days in early part; maximum rainfall on 24th ·42in.; prevailing S. and S.W. winds, very strong on 3rd from N.E. with rain, on 5th from S.W. also with showers, and on 25th from W. with rain; thunder on 21st.

Rotorua.—Showery early and during latter part of month, maximum fall on 4th 1·26in.; winds prevailed from S. and S.W., and strong on 26th from N.W., otherwise moderate; thunder on 10th; snow on 24th; hail on 25th.

Wellington.—On the whole a showery unpleasant month; frequent rain, with snow and hail, especially towards the latter part; prevailing winds from S.E., S.W., and N.W., and strong on six days; thunder on 9th; maximum rain recorded on 25th 2·35in.

Lincoln.—A wet month, the maximum rain recorded on 5th 1·555in.; prevailing S. and S.W. winds, and on the whole moderate; on 23rd stormy from N.W.; snow fell on four days, hail on three days, and fog on the 8th.

Dunedin.—Showery unpleasant weather, the greatest rain recorded on 16th ·60in.; prevailing S.W. wind, and generally moderate; snow on three days; hail on 16th, and fog on 1st.

GENERAL REMARKS.—Generally a wet, cold, unpleasant month, with frequent strong winds and snow and hail. On 10th an eruption occurred at Tarawera, and there were earth-tremors at Rotorua from 10th to 24th at frequent intervals, direction N.W. to S.E. Earthquake also at Wellington on 29th at 12.30 a.m., slight, and at Dunedin on 23rd. Meteors seen in South Island on 11th and 12th.
