The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all cases.

Excluding Greymouth, for which town statistics are now published for the first time, the total births in the above
boroughs amounted to 508 against 515 in July, a decrease of 7. The deaths in August were 203, an increase of 9 on the
number for July. Of the total deaths, males contributed 105; females, 103. Seventy-four of the deaths were of children
under 5 years of age, being 35·58 per cent. of the whole number; 39 of these were under 1 year of age.

THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 Years of Age and 5 Years and
upwards, and the Proportion per Cent. of Deaths from each Cause, in the Boroughs of Auckland, Wellington,
Christchurch, and Dunedin, that were registered during the Month of August, 1886.
