✨ Parliamentary Questions, Maritime Notices, Appointments
Sept. 23.] THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE. 1213
honourable friend will perhaps address his question to those
of my colleagues who represent the departments concerned
with those parts of Her Majesty's dominions.
Mr. Hutton.—Will the honourable gentleman present to
the House copies of the replies received?
Mr. Bryce.—That is a question we are still considering,
and before long I hope to be able to make a statement on
the subject.
[From the Times, 2nd June, 1886.]
BRITISH TRADE.
Mr. H. Vincent asked the Under-Secretary for the
Colonies, Whether the Chambers of Commerce throughout
the colonial dominions of the Empire had been informed of
the desire expressed by the Imperial Foreign Office to receive
suggestions from bodies and persons interested in British
trade as to the manner in which the services of Her Majesty's
diplomatic and consular officers could be turned to the best
advantage for its promotion and extension?
Mr. O. Morgan.—The Colonial Office does not communi-
cate directly with the Chambers of Commerce in the colonial
dominions of the Empire, but we propose calling the attention
of the Governments of the colonies in which there are such
bodies to the question raised by the honourable member,
and they will, no doubt, put themselves in communication
with their own Chambers of Commerce, and report to Her
Majesty's Government any recommendations received from
them on the subject. (Hear, hear.)
Mr. H. Vincent asked the Under-Secretary of State for
India a similar question with regard to the Chambers of
Commerce in the Indian Empire.
Mr. E. S. Howard.—The Chambers of Commerce in India
have not yet been communicated with in reference to this
matter, but the Government of India will be requested to
invite an expression of the views of the chambers and of
other commercial bodies on the subject. (Hear, hear.)
Notice to Mariners, No. 32 of 1886.
Marine Department,
Wellington, 16th September, 1886.
THE following Notice to Mariners, received from the
Department of Ports and Harbours, Melbourne, is
published for general information.
W. J. M. LARNACH.
SOUTH CHANNEL, GEELONG.—LIGHTS.
Pilots, masters of vessels, and others are hereby informed
that, on and after the 1st October, 1886, lights will be ex-
hibited from two beacons erected on the North Bank at the
eastern and western entrance to the South Channel, Geelong.
The lights will be of the ordinary jetty-type, elevated 21ft.
above the mean level of the sea, and will be visible in clear
weather about six miles distant.
From the eastern entrance a red light will be shown
towards Point Henry and the Bird Rock, with a sector of
white light marking a clear passage off the Point Wilson and
Wilson Spit buoys.
From approaching vessels the light will be seen on the
following bearings: Red from S.E. by E. round southerly to
W. ¼ N.; white from W. ¼ N. to N.W. by W.; and red from
N.W. by W. round northerly to E. ¾ N. (magnetic); the
remaining sector over the North Bank being obscured.
A white light will be exhibited from the western entrance
to the channel, visible to approaching vessels from the follow-
ing bearings: W. ¾ S. round northerly to S. ¼ W. (magnetic).
Caution.—The arc of the white light at the eastern
entrance covers the Point Lillias, outer cut, and channel
entrance buoys. Mariners are therefore warned that the
cutting of such light is solely for the purpose of marking the
Point Wilson and Wilson Spit buoys, and care should be
taken not to foul the buoys first mentioned.
ALEXR. WILSON,
Engineer in Charge, Ports and Harbours.
Department of Ports and Harbours,
Melbourne, 13th August, 1886.
Notice to Mariners, No. 33 of 1886.
Marine Department,
Wellington, 18th September, 1886.
THE following Notice to Mariners, received from the
Portmaster, Brisbane, is published for general in-
formation.
W. J. M. LARNACH.
NEW LIGHT, BAY ROCK, CLEVELAND BAY.
Notice is hereby given that, on and after this date, a fixed
white and red light will be exhibited from Bay Rock. The
apparatus is dioptric of the fourth order, and shows all
around the horizon, except where intercepted to the W.S.W.
through a sector of about 14°.
The light will be seen as a red light from N. by W. ¾ W.
to N.N.W. ¾ W., that is, from the black buoy marking the
17ft. patch to the red cage buoy, and white through the
remaining sectors. While the white light is in sight to the
eastward of the red sector, vessels will be clear of Virago
Rock and the shoal water off Cape Pallarendha.
Directions.—Vessels of heavy draft entering Cleveland Bay
by Magnetic Island Channel during the night, after passing
Bay Rock (which is steep-to, to within half a cable on either
side) will keep to the westward of the red sector until the
west point of Magnetic Island bears N.E. ¼ E., and then
haul up and steer S.E. ¼ E. until through the red sector,
when a course may be steered for the coal hulks and the
West Channel leading lights.
The tower is 25ft. high, circular, and painted stone colour;
and the light, which is placed at an elevation of 24ft., is
visible from a distance of fifteen miles.
G. P. HEATH, Commander, R.N.,
Portmaster.

THAMES RIVER, HAURAKI GULF.

Wellington, N.Z., 20th September, 1886.
NOTICE is hereby given that a telegraph cable has been
laid across the Thames River, at a point equidistant
from Kopu Wharf and the Turua Saw-mills, about two miles
from either; the exact position is shown by the telegraph
poles near the towers on each bank of the river. Masters of
vessels and others when approaching the vicinity are
cautioned not to foul or damage the cable with their anchors
or otherwise.
