Specific Febrile or Zymotic Diseases.—These diseases caused 16·50 per cent. of the deaths in 1885. The following are those that proved most fatal in each of the two past years :—

Diphtheria .. 32 .. 18
Typhoid fever .. 26 .. 29

Diarrhœal diseases .. 107 .. 74
Whooping cough .. 14 .. 45

Diphtheria was most fatal in Wellington in 1885, 19 out of the 32 deaths having occurred therein. Auckland came next, with 11 deaths. The mortality from typhoid fever was greatest in Wellington (11 deaths), and next in Auckland (9 deaths).

Sixty-four out of the 107 deaths from diarrhœal diseases occurred in Auckland; of these, 57 were of children under five years of age. There have not been any serious epidemic diseases during the year. Only one death has occurred from scarlet fever, and not one from measles.

Constitutional Diseases.—These diseases caused 18·82 per cent. of the total number of deaths; of these, the most fatal was phthisis, which claimed a death-toll of 145 persons. Cancer caused 41 deaths in 1885 against 50 in 1884.

Local Diseases.—The deaths in this class amounted to 635, or 46·15 per cent. of the deaths from all causes. Of these, the deaths from diseases of the nervous system amounted to 165, of which 25 were attributed to inflammation of the brain and its membranes (including 10 of children under five years of age), 42 were attributed to apoplexy, and 47 to convulsions, 45 having been of children under five years of age. Diseases of the circulatory system caused 99 deaths; of these, 85 were caused by various forms of heart disease. Diseases of the respiratory organs caused 168 deaths; bronchitis and pneumonia having together caused 118 of the number, of which 58 were of children under five years of age.

Violent Deaths.—The number of deaths classified under this head were 58, of which 51 were accidental, 1 was a case of murder, and 6 were suicidal. The deaths from railway and tram accidents were 3 in number, and those from drowning 11.

Mining Notices.

NOTICE OF INTENTION TO BRING WATER-RACES UNDER SECTION 31 OF “MINES ACT, 1877.”

To the Mining Registrar at Arrow, in the Mining District of Wakatipu, and all whom it may concern.

WE, LAWRENCE D. MANSON and JOHN MONCRIEFF, do hereby give notice that we intend to bring under section 31 of “The Mines Act, 1877,” our water-races and their tributaries, held by us under original license, as follows: One sluice-head from a creek adjoining Deep Creek, Kawarau, on Nevis Bluff side; License No. 1865, dated 12th November, 1871; race, 200 yards long. Two extra sluice-heads from Deep Creek, Kawarau; License No. 1494, dated 12th November, 1872. Two sluice-heads from Deep Creek, Kawarau; License No. 1493, dated 12th November, 1873; this race being four miles long: the whole of the races being combined: and terminating at our claim on the south bank of Kawarau River, near Gibbston, Kawarau. The total carrying capacity of the said races being five sluice-heads. Lost renewals of above licenses, 12th November, 1885; number and date of miners’ rights, 51636, 3rd January, 1885, and 51670, 14th February, 1885.
