• Corrected in accordance with estimates of population based on the census return of 1886.
  The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all cases.
  The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 514 against 435 in April, an increase of 79. The deaths in
  May were 156, a decrease of 4 on the number for April. Of the above deaths, males contributed 87; females, 69.
  Fifty-three of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 33·97 per cent. of the whole number; 37 of these
  were of children under 1 year of age.
  THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 Years of Age and 5 Years and
  upwards, and the Proportions per Cent. of Deaths from each Cause, in the Boroughs of Auckland, Wellington,
  Christchurch, and Dunedin, that were registered during the Month of May, 1886.
