WRITTEN tenders will be received at this office until noon of Tuesday, the 29th June, 1886, for the above contract. They are to be marked on the outside “Tender for Post Office Pillar-boxes Contract,” and addressed to the Hon. the Minister for Public Works, Wellington. Telegraphic tenders, similarly marked and addressed, will be received if presented at any Telegraph Office by noon of the same date, provided that written tenders are lodged at any District or Resident Engineer’s Office by the same hour. Drawings, specifications, and general conditions may be seen at this office, and at the Public Works Offices, Auckland, Wanganui, Christchurch, and Dunedin.

Certificates of Registry to be delivered up when a Ship is lost or ceases to be British.

THE following notice, received from the Board of Trade, is published for general information.

OFFICIAL NOTICE.—CAUTION TO SHIPOWNERS AND SHIP-MASTERS.
Failure to give Notice or to deliver up Certificate of Registry when a Ship is actually or constructively lost or ceases to be British.
THE attention of masters and owners is called to the provisions of section 53 of “The Merchant Shipping Act, 1854,” which are as follows :—
If any registered ship is either actually or constructively lost, taken by the enemy, burnt, or broken up, or if by reason of a transfer to any persons not qualified to be owners of British ships, or of any other matter or thing, any such ship as aforesaid ceases to be a British ship, every person who at the time of the occurrence of any of the aforesaid events owns such ship or any share therein shall, immediately upon obtaining knowledge of any such occurrence, if no notice thereof has already been given to the Registrar at the port of registry of such ship, give such notice to him, and he shall make an entry thereof in his register-book; and, except in cases where the certificate of registry is lost or destroyed, the master of every such ship so circumstanced as aforesaid shall immediately, if such event occurs in port, but if the same occurs elsewhere then within ten days after his arrival in port, deliver the certificate of registry of such ship to the Registrar or, if there be no Registrar, to the British Consular Officer at such port; and such Registrar, if he is not himself the Registrar of her port of registry, or such British Consular Officer, shall forthwith forward the certificate so delivered to him to the Registrar of the port of registry of the ship; and every owner and master who, without reasonable case, makes default in obeying the provisions of this section shall for each offence incur a penalty not exceeding one hundred pounds.
And notice is hereby given that it is the intention of the Board of Trade to institute proceedings for the recovery of the prescribed penalty of one hundred pounds against any owner or part-owner who fails to give the required notice to the Registrar of the port of registry of his ship, and against any master who makes default in delivering up the certificate of registry to the Registrar or Consular Officer, as the case may be, in contravention of this statutory requirement.

TENDERS will be received at this office up to noon of the 17th July next for the erection of a Native Schoolhouse and Teacher’s Residence at Raukokore, near Cape Runaway, Bay of Plenty.
Plans, &c., may be seen and forms of tender obtained on application to the Native Agent, Auckland, or the Resident Magistrate at Tauranga, Opotiki, or Gisborne.
Telegraphic tenders will be accepted provided the original tender and deposit are lodged at the same time with one of the officers above mentioned.

A SCHOLARSHIP of the value of £100 per annum, and tenable for three years, is biennially awarded to the highest among those candidates at the London University January Matriculation Examination held in New Zealand, who pass either in the Honours or in the First Division, are not less than sixteen nor more than twenty-two years of age, and are desirous of prosecuting their studies either at the University of Edinburgh, or at the University College, London, with a view to graduation in one of the Faculties of the University of London.
