The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all cases.
The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 435 against 510 in March, a decrease of 75. The deaths in April were 160, a decrease of 104 on the number for March. Of the above deaths, males contributed 92; females, 68. Seventy-two of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 45·00 per cent. of the whole number; 56 of these were of children under 1 year of age.
The census returns show that the estimates of the borough populations published in last month’s report were, in many cases, widely astray. As there are no means of annually ascertaining the extent of the movements of the population from one part of the colony to another, it is impossible, where the changes are frequent and often considerable, always to estimate the population of a given locality and at a specified time with any degree of accuracy. This can only be done for a limited period after a census enumeration.
The death-rates for last year in the final column are not the same as those previously published. The estimates of the borough populations for the year have been recalculated on the basis of the census returns, and the rates now given are based on the amended estimates.
THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 Years of Age and 5 Years and upwards, and the Proportions per Cent. of Deaths from each Cause, in the Boroughs of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin, that were registered during the Month of April, 1886.
