The following remarks apply only to the four principal boroughs:—
The births in February were 259 against 274 in January, a decrease of 15. The deaths in February were 154 against 147 in January, an increase of 7.
There were 10 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards. Four females of 88, 77, 71, and 68 died at Auckland; a female of 66 at Wellington: 2 males of 73 and 65, and a female of 72, at Christchurch; a male of 75 and a female of 69 at Dunedin.
Specific Febrile or Zymotic Diseases.—These diseases were slightly more fatal in February than in the preceding month, and they caused 11, or nearly 30 per cent., more deaths than in February, 1885. The increase in each case was due to the larger number of deaths from diarrhoeal diseases, the mean temperature having been higher in February than in January, and also about 2 degrees higher than in February, 1885. Of the 40 deaths last month from diarrhoeal diseases 33 were of infants under 1 year of age, and 5 of children between 1 and 2 years. The greatest mortality from these diseases occurred in Wellington, the deaths there having numbered 17.
Constitutional Diseases.—The deaths from these causes were not so numerous as in the previous month. There were 8 deaths from phthisis against 15 in January, and 4 deaths from cancer against 8 in January.
Local Diseases.—These diseases on the whole caused a few more deaths in February than in January, but the deaths from diseases of the circulatory and respiratory systems were less numerous, while those from diseases of the nervous system were more numerous, apoplexy having caused 4 deaths against 1 in the previous month, and diseases of the digestive system caused 19 deaths in February against 12 in January.
Violent Deaths.—Accidents of various kinds caused the large number of 9 deaths, or about 1 out of every 17 deaths from all causes: 2 of these were from drowning, and 1 from inhalation of chloroform.
The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal specific febrile or zymotic diseases, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong, as being the most important special diseases which give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
