REGISTRAR-GENERAL'S Report on the Vital Statistics of the Principal Towns of New Zealand during the Month of September, 1885.

The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all cases.

The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 523, against 504 in August, an increase of 19. The deaths in September were 196, an increase of 16 on the number for August. Of the above deaths, males contributed 106; females, 90. Sixty-one of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 31·28 per cent. of the whole number; 47 of these were of children under 1 year of age.

The following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 Years of Age and 5 Years and upwards, and the Proportions per Cent. of Deaths from each Cause, in the Boroughs of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin, that were registered during the Month of September, 1885.
