vessels—a position which he, as a experienced seaman,
must have known to be one of extreme danger. In any case
soundings obtained under such circumstances would be of
very little value. I am of opinion, therefore, that the
evidence discloses great want of care on the part of the
master of the "Herald."
I have suspended his certificate for three months, and
ordered him to pay £32 5s. 6d. for costs, being the costs of
all witnesses subpoenaed at his request, and half the balance
of the costs of the inquiry.
Given under my hand this eleventh day of June, one
thousand eight hundred and eighty-five, at Auck-
land, New Zealand.

THE following Notice to Mariners, received from the
Portmaster, Brisbane, is published for general infor-
mation

SIGNAL FOR COAST PILOT FOR THE INNER ROUTE, TORRES
STRAITS.
Notice is hereby given that vessels requiring the services of
a coast pilot for the inner route will in future hoist, at the
fore, "Flag K" (yellow and blue divided vertically), instead
of the Pilot Jack, the signal for a harbour pilot.

Alterations and Additions to the Scale of Fares and Charges
in force on New Zealand Railways.
IN accordance with section 144 of "The Public Works
Act, 1882," I, Edward Richardson, Minister for Public
Works, do hereby make the following alterations and addi-
tions to the scale of charges, to come into force on and after
the 27th day of July, 1885:—
PART V.—CLASSIFICATION OF GOODS.

PART VI.—WHARVES.
AUCKLAND SECTION.—ONEHUNGA WHARF RATES.
Goods transhipped from or into lighters or vessels, from or
into vessels lying alongside the wharves, will be subject to
half rates.

Issue of New Zealand War Medal.
