The following remarks apply only to the four principal boroughs:—
The births in May were 283, against 277 in April, an increase of 6. The deaths in May were 93, against 117 in April, a decrease of 24.
There were 12 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: four males of 82, 75, 74, and 68, and a female of 65, died at Auckland; two males of 73 and 72 at Wellington; a male of 66 at Christchurch; and two males of 80 and 85, and two females of 72 and 71, at Dunedin.
Zymotic Diseases.—The deaths from these diseases increased from 13 in April to 17 in May. Of these 17 deaths, 6 were caused by typhoid fever, of which 3 occurred in Wellington. One death from scarlatina occurred in Christchurch.
Constitutional Diseases.—These diseases caused only 13 deaths in April, against 28 in May; the deaths from cancer having been 7 in April and 3 in May, and those from phthisis 14 and 7 in April and May respectively.
