THE Crown and Native Lands Rating Act, 1882,” and the Amendment thereof.
To each and every the owner or owners of land described in the substituted valuation rolls of Native lands supplied to the local bodies, the names of which are set forth in the Schedule hereunder, under the provisions of the above Acts and all other Acts affecting the same or relating thereto.
WHEREAS demand having been made to me, the undersigned Colonial Treasurer of the Colony of New Zealand, in accordance with the provisions of “The Crown and Native Lands Rating Act, 1882,” by or on behalf of the said local bodies, for payment of the rates appearing to be payable under or by virtue of the said rolls:
: Notice is hereby given to you and each and every of you that rolls of Native lands are now deposited at the offices of the said several local bodies, which said rolls are in the Maori language, and show the rateable value of the Native lands therein mentioned or described.
And you and each and every of you, the owners of the said lands, are hereby required and directed to pay the said rates on or before the 14th day of June, 1885, such payment to be made by you at the office of the local body in whose district the lands affected are respectively comprised, and as noted in the said Schedule.

IN accordance with section 144 of “The Public Works Act, 1882,” I, Edward Richardson, Minister for Public Works, do hereby make the following alterations and additions to the scale of charges, to come into force on and after the fifteenth day of June, 1885:

Steam Service between New Zealand and Tonga, Samoa, Tahiti, and Rarotonga.
ARTICLES of AGREEMENT made this tenth day of June, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty-five, between Alexander Bell Donald, Charles Allan Edenborough, and Richard Exham, trading under the style of Donald and Edenborough, Merchants, of Auckland, in the Colony of New Zealand, and Rarotonga, one of the Cook Islands (hereinafter styled “the Contractors”), of the one part, and the Honourable Sir Julius Vogel, the Postmaster-General of the said Colony of New Zealand, on behalf of the Government of New Zealand, in pursuance of the provisions of “The New Zealand Post Office Act, 1881,” of the other part, WITNESS that, for the considerations hereinafter mentioned, the Contractors, for themselves, their and each of their executors, administrators, and (permitted) assigns, do hereby jointly and severally covenant with the said Postmaster-General, and his successors in office (hereinafter styled “the Postmaster-General”),

That at all times during the continuance of this agreement, or so long as the service hereby agreed to be performed between Dunedin, in the Colony of New Zealand, and Tonga, one of the Friendly Islands, Samoa, one of the Navigator Islands, Tahiti, in the Society group, and Rarotonga aforesaid, ought to be performed in pursuance thereof, the Contractors will, in the manner hereinafter mentioned, provide and keep seaworthy, and in complete repair, a substantial and efficient steam-vessel for the said service.

The vessel to be employed under this agreement shall be the steamship chartered by the Contractors known as the “Janet Nicoll,” or such other steamship as may from time to time be approved of by the Postmaster-General for the purposes of this contract, and such steamship shall be always furnished while in actual use with all appropriate and necessary machinery, engines, apparel, furniture, stores, tackle, boats, fuel, lamps, oil for lamps and engines, tallow, provisions, anchors, cables, fire-pumps, and other proper means of extinguishing fire, lightning conductors, charts, chronometers, proper nautical instruments, medicines, and whatsoever else may be requisite for equipping the said vessel and rendering it constantly efficient for the service hereby agreed to be performed; and also manned and provided with competent officers, and with a sufficient number of efficient engineers, and a sufficient crew of able seamen and other men: to be in all respects, as to vessels, engines, equipments, officers, engineers, and crew, subject in the first instance, and from time to time at all times afterwards, to the approval of the Postmaster-General, or of such other competent person or persons as he shall at any time or times, or from time to time, authorize to inspect and examine the same.
