Simia. 4. The typical mode of development and chief
deviations therefrom in the various classes of animals.
Generalizations of embryology. 5. The main facts of the
distribution of vertebrata in time and space. The chief
characters of the zoo-geographical regions. The bearing of
the facts of distribution on the theory of evolution. 6.
Generalizations of zoology. Origin of species.
Practical Work. (The examination to last for two days, of
six hours each.)—1. The dissection and microscopical ex-
amination of the types required for the pass examination,
together with the forms printed in italics in §2, supra. Can-
didates will also be expected to recognize and describe any
characteristic part of any of the skeletons mentioned in §3,
as well as any typical example of vertebrate exoskeleton.
(c.) Geology, including lithology and palæontology.
(5.) Physiology: Human anatomy and animal physiology.
(6.) Mental Science (as defined in the statute “Of Honours
in Arts”).
III. In each of the Honours subjects, with the exception of
mathematics and mental science, candidates shall be re-
quired to pass a practical examination.
IV. The scope of the examination in all the Honours
subjects shall be the same as that prescribed for candidates
for Honours in Arts.

Standing Orders on Local Bills.
THE following amended Standing Orders of the Houses
of the General Assembly relative to Local Bills are
published for general information.

Local Bills are those which, not being Private Bills,
affect particular localities only. -
No Local Bill shall be read a second time unless
notice shall have been given of the said Bill in the locality
to which the Bill refers; such notice shall state explicitly
the object which such Bill is intended to effect, and shall
have been published once at least in each of three suc-
cessive weeks before the second reading in a newspaper
circulating in such locality. -
At the time of the first publication of such notice, a
copy of the Bill shall be deposited in the Resident Magis-
trate’s Court of the district, and shall be open to public
inspection; and such Bill shall, at the expiration of the
prescribed period for advertising, be forwarded to the Clerk
of the House in which the Bill is to be introduced, indorsed
with a certificate from the Resident Magistrate, or Clerk of
the Resident Magistrate’s Court, that such Bill was so depo-
sited, and remained open for public inspection for the pre-
scribed time. -
When it is intended in such Bill to take power to
deal with any lands, plans or surveys of such lands, on a
scale of not less than two inches to a mile, and certified by
an authorized surveyor, shall be deposited with the Bill. -
In the case of Bills authorizing the construction of
harbour works, or the raising of further loans for the com-
pletion of harbour works previously authorized, such Bill
shall be accompanied by a statement of the financial posi-
tion of the promoters, an estimate of the cost of construc-
tion, and the estimated increased revenue to be derived from
the proposed works, together with the plans or surveys before
mentioned. -
Before the Bill is introduced into the Legislative
Council or House of Representatives, the before-mentioned
plans or surveys and estimates shall be forwarded to the
office of the Clerk of the House in which the Bill is to be
initiated.

Native Land Court Notices.
Notice under “Native Land Laws Amendment Act, 1883.”
I, JOHN EDWIN MACDONALD, Chief Judge of the Native
Land Court, do hereby, in compliance with the duty
imposed upon me by “The Native Land Laws Amendment
Act, 1883,” give notice that on the 30th day of April,
1885, the title to the land mentioned in the Schedule herein
became, within the meaning of the said Act, ascertained ;
and, further, that dealings with the said land will cease to
be prohibited by the provisions of the said Act on the 9th
day of June, 1885.
SCHEDULE.
NAME by which land is known: Te Popo. Native Land
Court District wherein situate: Bay of Islands. Area: 2
acres.

Application for Rehearing of Claim.
NATIVE LAND COURT, NEW ZEALAND:
AUCKLAND DISTRICT.
IN the matter of a decision of the Court given during a
sitting opened at Kihikihi, on the 23rd day of April,
1884, upon the hearing of a claim for the investigation of
title to land situate in the said district, and known as “Ma-
nukatutahiki Otautanga or Maungatautari;” and in the
matter of several applications for a rehearing upon the
aforesaid claim made to the Court in writing within three
months after such decision by Natives thinking themselves
aggrieved thereby :
I, John Edwin Macdonald, Chief Judge of the said Court,
in exercise of the authority in that behalf vested in me, do
hereby order, as to such part of the case in which such
decision was given as makes order in favour of Ngatihaua,
that a rehearing, to the extent of inquiring whether the names
of Hera Nikora and of her sisters ought not to have been
inserted in any order made in favour of Ngatihaua, be had
on the 2nd day of July, 1885, at a sitting of the Court to be
then holden at Cambridge aforesaid. In all other respects I
dismiss the said applications.
