A label printed in colours, in the upper part are the words
“The Correct Thing At Last,” below is the representation of
an Australian digger, dressed in red Garibaldi shirt, belt,
trousers, and knee-boots, holding a cake of tobacco in his
right hand and a pickaxe in his left hand; a shovel and can
are on the ground beside him.

Nature of the Article to which it is intended such Trade

Application for Registration of a Trade Mark.

NOTICE is hereby given that Messrs. WHITAKER AND
RUSSELL, of Wyndham Street, Auckland, in the
Colony of New Zealand, Solicitors, have applied, on behalf of
Messrs. THORNTON, SMITH, AND FIRTH, of Auckland afore-
said, to register, under “The Trade Marks Act, 1866,” the
trade mark of which the following is a description, viz. :—

Description of Trade Mark.

A label the top and bottom edges of which have a blue
Vandyke border with yellow streak above and below. In the
centre of the label is a picture of Matamata homestead and
tower, enclosed in a yellow border; above the picture, on red
ground, are the words “White Clover Honey” in white, and
“not strained” in black; across the picture the words
“Tower Brand” in red. Under the picture and between the
borders the words “Matamata apiary” in white, and under-
neath same, “Auckland, New Zealand,” in black. Both
sides of the picture have a panel surrounded with a white-
clover border, one panel having a scroll resting on a fence-panel,
with words underneath in black, on cream-colour ground,
“Notice. This honey is separated from the combs by the
‘Honey Extractor,’ thereby retaining its original aromatic
flavour;” the other panel has a beehive on a stand with
following words, “Directions. Should this honey granu-
late, which may be taken as one of the surest tests of its
purity, it may be liquidated again by immersing the tin in hot
water.” On either side of the picture are the words, “Pro-
prietor, J. C. Firth; Manager, I. Hopkins,” in yellow, on black
ground.

Honey.

Bonus for Kerosene.

Wellington, 18th February, 1885.

NOTICE is hereby given that a bonus will be paid for
the production of kerosene under the following con-
ditions :—

A bonus of sixpence per gallon will be paid on kerosene
produced within the colony to an extent not exceeding
50,000 gallons, in quantities of not less than 10,000 gallons
at a time; the kerosene to be of a quality approved of by
Government, and to be sold at a fair average market price.

Conditions.

  1. Notice of intention to claim the above bonus must be
    given in writing to the Colonial Secretary not later than the
    31st December, 1885.

  2. The claim must be made before the 30th June, 1886.

  3. The first claimant who proves to the satisfaction of the
    Government that he has fulfilled all the conditions to be the
    recipient of the bonus.

  4. The other conditions as to quantity, priority, quality,
    and value to be fulfilled to the satisfaction of an officer
    appointed for the purpose by the Government.

Bonuses on Colonial Industries.

NOTICE is hereby given that the following bonuses will
be paid on articles produced in the Colony of New
Zealand, as under :—

STARCH.

A bonus of three hundred pounds (£300) will be given on
the first 50 tons of good marketable starch manufactured
in the Colony of New Zealand.

Conditions.

  1. Notice of intention to claim the bonus must be given in
    writing to the Colonial Secretary not later than the 30th
    June, 1885.

  2. The claim must be made before the 31st December,

  3. The first claimant who proves, to the satisfaction of the
    Government, that he has fulfilled all the conditions is to be
    the recipient of the bonus.

  4. Evidence to be produced of such a nature as will
    enable an officer appointed by the Government to certify
    that the above-stated quantity has been actually made, sold,
    and delivered.

  5. The bonus to be paid only on the certificate of such
    officer.

PRINTING-PAPER.

A bonus of five hundred pounds (£500) will be given for the
production of the first 50 tons of printing-paper made by
machinery permanently established and working in the
colony. The bonus will be paid to the producer who effects
the first bonâ fide sale of the amount of printing-paper
specified.

SILK.

A bonus of fifty per cent. on the value realized for the first
thousand pounds' (£1,000) worth of cocoons of the silkworm,
or silkworms' eggs, produced in the colony, to be paid on
quantities of not less value than fifty pounds (£50) nor more
than one hundred pounds (£100) produced by any one person.

Conditions.

  1. Notice of intention to claim any of the above bonuses
    must be given in writing to the Colonial Secretary not later
    than the 30th June, 1885.

  2. The claim must be made before the 31st December,

  3. The first claimant of any bonus who proves to the satis-
    faction of the Government that he has fulfilled all the con-
    ditions to be the recipient of the bonus.

  4. The other conditions as to quantity, priority, quality,
    and value to be fulfilled to the satisfaction of an officer
    appointed for the purpose by the Government.

IRON.

A bonus of one thousand pounds (£1,000) will be given for
the production in New Zealand of 300 tons of pig-iron, of
marketable quality, from ore produced in New Zealand.

WROUGHT-IRON.

A bonus of one thousand pounds (£1,000) will be given for
the production in New Zealand, by a direct process, of 200
tons of “iron blooms,” of marketable quality, from ore pro-
duced in New Zealand.

Conditions.

  1. The bonus not to be given for any quantity less than
    100 tons.

  2. Notice of the intention to erect ironworks and claim the
    bonus must be given to the Colonial Secretary before the 30th
    June, 1885.

  3. The bonus must be claimed before the 31st December,

  4. In the event of more than one claimant giving such
    notice, not more than seven-tenths of the bonus may be
    claimed by the first producer, and not more than three-tenths
    by the second producer; but, if only one claimant becomes a
    producer on the above conditions, he may claim the whole of
    the bonus.

  5. The iron in respect of which any bonus is claimed, and
    the ore from which it is manufactured, will be examined by
    an officer to be appointed by the Government, who may
    require the production of bonâ fide account-sales of quan-
    tities not less than 100 tons weight, showing that such iron
    has been sold at a fair market price as wrought-iron.

New Zealand Industrial Exhibition, 1885.

PRIZE ESSAYS.

Wellington, 29th December, 1884.

ONE gold medal and twenty guineas, one silver medal
and ten guineas, and one bronze medal and five
guineas will be awarded for essays on the present condition
and future prospects of the industrial resources of New
Zealand, and the best means for fostering their development.
In judging of the merits of the essays preference will be
given to those which are of a practical character, rather than
to mere abstract or theoretical disquisitions. The essays
must be sent in to the Secretary of the Exhibition, signed
with a motto and accompanied by a sealed envelope con-
