Application for Registration of a Trade Mark.
Colonial Secretary’s Office,
Wellington, 22nd December, 1884.
NOTICE is hereby given that Messrs. WILLIAM WHYTE
AND COMPANY, of 104, George Street, Dunedin, in the
Colony of New Zealand, Wine Merchants, &c., have applied
to register, under “The Trade Marks Act, 1866,” a trade
mark of which the following is a description:—
Description of Trade Mark.
A representation of a Maori chief with earring in right
tear, holding a mere in his right hand, with a blanket thrown
over from left shoulder to armpit of right arm. On the left
hand of the Maori are the representations of a nikau and a
moa standing beside it, together with two kiwis feeding
near a cluster of ground ferns and flax. In the distant
background is a swamp, a hill, and a mountain. The whole
is enclosed in a square frame, and on a bar extending from
the chief’s right arm at an angle are printed the words
“Maori Chief,” and underneath these words is printed
horizontally the word “Coffee.” To the left of the square
described is another square figure showing W. Whyte and
Co.’s registered coffee brands. To the right are two other
squares, one a scroll of “W. Whyte and Co., Zealandia Coffee
and Spice Works,” the other a representation of a Maori
whare, with two Natives in front and a creek rippling past
near where they are seated.
Nature of the Article to which it is intended such Trade
Mark shall apply.
Coffee.
