The following remarks apply only to the above four principal boroughs :—

The births were 286 in June, against 290 in May, a decrease of 4. The deaths in June were 94, against 93 in May, an increase of 1.

There were 11 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: a male of 66, and 5 females of 82, 81, 75, and 69 (two), died at Auckland; 2 males of 69 and 68 at Wellington; a female of 66 at Christchurch; and 2 males of 74 and 73 at Dunedin.

The death-rates at Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch for June were lower than for May. At Dunedin the rate was slightly higher, chiefly owing to an increased number of deaths in June from zymotic and constitutional diseases.

Zymotic Diseases.—The proportion of the total deaths at the four towns, which fell from 27·29 per cent. in April to 22·58 per cent. in May, was still lower in June, the rate being 12·83 per cent. Three deaths took place at Auckland, caused by typhoid fever and diarrhoea; 1 at Wellington from pyæmia; and 1 at Christchurch from erysipelas. At Dunedin there were 8 deaths, including 2 of children from measles, 2 from croup, 1 from whooping cough, 1 from typhoid fever, 1 from erysipelas, and 1 from rheumatism.

The mortality for June from the zymotic class of disease at the chief towns collectively was lower than for any previous month since May of 1883, when the actual number of deaths was the same (13); but the proportion of the mortality from all causes greater, being 16·05 per cent. of the total deaths.

Constitutional Diseases.—Of the total number of deaths 10 occurred at Dunedin—a very large number, including 5 deaths from cancer, and 5 from phthisis.
