The total number of births (3,371) in these four boroughs during the year 1883 was equal to a rate of 37·30 per 1,000 of the aggregate mean population. There was, however, a considerable diversity in the rates in the various boroughs, as shown hereunder:—

Borough. Mean Population. No. of Births. Rate per 1,000 of Population.
Auckland 26,979 1,065 39·47
Wellington 21,885 913 41·71
Christchurch 15,930 547 34·34
Dunedin 25,559 846 33·10

This variation in the birth-rate was not owing to any difference in the southern boroughs in the proportion of the sexes, for the following are the estimated proportions in each borough, based on the census returns:—

Males. Females.
Auckland 100
Wellington 100
Christchurch 100
Dunedin 100

The total deaths in these boroughs during the year of children under 1 year of age amounts to 437, or 12·97 per cent. of the births. The infantile mortality in each of the boroughs was as follows:—

DEATHS OF CHILDREN UNDER ONE YEAR TO EVERY 100 BIRTHS.

Auckland 11·46 Christchurch 14·44
Wellington 14·24 Dunedin 12·53

Of the total deaths in these boroughs 598, or 43·36 per cent., were of children under 5 years of age. The deaths in each borough were as follow:—

Total Deaths. Deaths of Children under 5 Years of Age. Proportion per cent. of Deaths of Children under 5 Years of Age to Total Deaths.
Auckland 393 168
Wellington 362 173
Christchurch 268 113
Dunedin 356 144

Zymotic Diseases.—The deaths in this class amounted to 369, or 26·76 per cent. of the total deaths. Diphtheria caused 18 deaths, of which 7 were of children under 5 years of age. Whooping cough caused 53 deaths, all but 3 having been of children under 5 years of age. The deaths from typhoid fever amounted to 35, 3 only having occurred in Dunedin. Dysentery and diarrhoea caused the largest number of deaths, viz., 150; the majority, 136, having been of children under 5 years of age. The mortality from these last-named causes was much less in Christchurch than in the other boroughs.
